Warriors fall to Falcons in conference doubledip

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Sophomore Elisa Novak (Ambler, Pa./Germantown Academy) reached base in each game to extend her streak to eight games for the Lycoming College softball team, but Messiah College was able to use solid starts in both games to post a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader sweep, winning 17-3 in game one and 5-1 in game two, on Saturday afternoon, March 22, at the Shangraw Athletic Complex.

Novak posted a hit and a run in the second game and she walked in the first game, as the sophomore infielder continues to lead the Warriors (5-4 overall, 0-2 Commonwealth) with a .400 batting average and 10 hits.

In the second game, sophomore Kristi Weaver (Milton, Pa./Milton Area) tossed a complete-game six hitter, but Messiah's Clarissa Mees allowed just three hits and one unearned run in a complete game effort.

The Falcons (7-5 overall, 2-0 Commonwealth) scored two runs in the first inning of the game, using a walk and two singles to score a pair of runs. They added a single run in the fourth and two more in the fifth to take a 5-0 lead.

The Warriors scored their lone run in the sixth, as Novak singled to left with one out. On the next play, she scored on a crazy series of plays, as junior Katie Pugh (Sykesville, Md./Century) laid down a bunt and reached on an error. Novak rolled into third as a throw got away from the second baseman when Pugh advanced off the original throw that got away and when the throw to second was mishandled, Novak scored. The Warriors couldn't get any more runs, though, as two hard hit liners were caught to end the threat.

Brooke Pompeo went 2-for-3 with a run scored and Becky Notte went 2-for-4 with a RBI to lead the Falcons. Coutney Allen went 1-for-2 and scored twice.

Novak, sophomore Dominique Thomas (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport Area) and junior Kali Moeller (Fredericksburg, Va./Chancellor) posted hits for the Warriors.

In the first game, Messiah used 16 runs in the first three innings to cruise to a 17-3 win.

Messiah scored two in the first before adding eight in the second and six in the third, taking a 16-3 lead by the end of that frame.

The Warriors got on the board with two runs in the second inning, as sophomore Ashley Witmer (Lancaster, Pa./Penn Manor) was hit by a pitch before Weaver hit an RBI double and took third on the throw before scoring on a groundout.

In the third, the Warriors scored once again, as sophomore Ashley Burger (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville Area) singled to lead off, took second on a one-out passed ball and scored on a two-out double by freshman Kelcie Crabb (Millmont, Pa./Mifflinburg Area).

Messiah rounded out the scoring with one more run in the fifth.

Weaver and Crabb both posted RBI doubles to lead the Warriors, and Burger added a run and a hit.

Becky Notte led the Falcons with a 4-for-4 game, as she added two doubles, three runs and three RBI. Amanda Jones posted three hits and two RBI and Pompeo, Allen, Emily Quatrale, Nicole Blantz and Tina Lehman all had two hits. Allen also scored three times.

Junior Caroline Lapano (Harrisburg, Pa./Trinity) took the loss for the Warriors, allowing six earned runs in 2 1/3 innings. Sara McKee earned the win for Messiah, tossing two innings of scoreless relief.

The Warriors get back on the field on Tuesday, March 25, when they head to Keystone for a 3 p.m. non-conference doubleheader.
