Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Warriors edged by undefeated Hamilton

CLINTON, N.Y. – Sophomore Nykolas King (New York, N.Y./Manhattan Center for Science & Math) led the Lycoming College men's basketball team with 13 points and four rebounds to earn All-Tournament Team honors, but undefeated Hamilton College was able to outlast Lycoming, 66-62, in the finale of the Hamilton at Alumni Gym on Sunday, Nov. 30, at Alumni Gym.

The Warriors (3-3 overall) shot just 35 percent from the field (23-of-66), but used 12 steals to force 21 turnovers to never let the Continentals (6-0 overall) lead by more than five points, as the Warriors held a 14-4 advantage in points off turnover. However, the Continentals shot 41 percent (22-of-54) from the field and hit 19 free throws, six more than the Warriors, and held a 47-37 advantage on the glass thanks to a frontcourt with a distinct height advantage.

Lycoming jumped out to a 13-6 lead in the game's first four minutes, with freshman Alex Newbold (Bowie, Md./DeMatha Catholic) hitting a layup to cap the run. Hamilton responded with a 11-2 run to take a 18-15 lead with 11:12 left, starting a run of three ties and five lead changes that finished off the half. The Warriors notched the last lead change in the half, as freshman Issak Boden (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Loughlin) hit a pair of free throws with 50 seconds left to take a 32-31 lead into the break.

In the second half, the Warriors built the lead back to five points twice, the last time at 43-38 after a layup by freshman Justin Iton (Hackensack, N.J./Dwight Morrow), but a 7-1 run helped the Continentals take a 45-44 lead with 12:04 left and they never trailed again. Lycoming kept the Continentals within five points, closing within one at 49-48 and closed within two points with 10 seconds left when senior Malcolm Covington (Queens, N.Y./Blessed Sacrament) hit a 3-pointer, but Hamilton's Joseph Lin closed out the game with a pair of free throws with six seconds left.

Iton added a career-high 12 points and seven rebounds and Newbold finished with 11 points and three steals. Freshman Chris Wallace (Randallstown, Md./Calvert Hall) notched eight points and six rebounds and senior Patrick Dougher (Scotch Plains, N.J./Scotch Plains-Fanwood) added six points and three steals.

Wes Wilbur led Hamilton with a game-high 14 points and nine rebounds to go with two blocks and two steals. Lin posted 12 points, seven rebounds and five assists and Jack Dwyer added 12 points and two assists. Karl Koster added 11 points and four rebounds.

The Warriors get back in action on Wednesday, Dec. 3, when they host Messiah in a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader, beginning with the women's game at 6 p.m. before the men play at 8 p.m. The game will feature a food drive that will benefit 10 local agencies in the Lycoming County area.
