READING, Pa. – Senior
Ali Derr (Milton Pa./Milton) led the Lycoming College women's basketball team with 10 points and 10 rebounds to earn her second double-double of the season, but a late rally by Alvernia University helped it post a come-from-behind 54-51 win on Saturday afternoon, Nov. 22, at Jack McCloskey Court.
Alvernia (2-1 overall, 1-0 Commonwealth) used a 29-12 run over the final 15 minutes to post the come-from-behind win, taking the lead for good with 1:54 left, as Lycoming (3-1 overall, 1-0 Commonwealth) missed its final six shots, including a 3-point attempt to tie it that fell off the rim with three seconds left.
Senior
Janelle Ziminski (Drums, Pa./Hazleton), coming off a 13-point, six-rebound performance against Penn State Hazleton, led all scorers with 12 points, as she went 3-for-6 from behind the 3-point line and she added three assists and three rebounds.
Ziminski's final three-pointer came with 15:43 remaining in the second half when Lycoming was leading 39-25, the biggest lead of the game. From there, Alvernia went on a 13-2 run over the next four minutes to cut the deficit to three, but Derr answered with a jumper to end the run before the Crusaders went on a 5-0 run to tie it at 43.
The game went back and forth in the final 10 minutes with seven lead changes and three ties. The Warriors last lead came at 2:19 after junior
Chelsea Henderson (Yonkers, N.Y./Yonkers) hit a free throw for the 51-50 advantage. Alvernia earned the final lead with 1:54 remaining on a jumper by Kaitlyn Yoh and Morgan Downs added a pair of free throws with 17 seconds left to make up the final margin.
Freshman
Shelby Mueller (Collegeville, Pa./Spring-Ford) added eight points and nine rebounds and junior
Olivia Manges (York, Pa./West York) had five points and seven assists for the Warriors. Sophomore
Nicole Calella (Sandyston, N.J./Kittatinny Regional) added six points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals.
Tyra Roberts had 10 points and four rebounds, Downs had eight points and six rebounds and Yoh added six points, four rebounds and four assists for the Crusaders.
The Crusaders held a 16-8 advantage on points in the paint, helping to make up for losing the rebounding (45-42) and turnover (18-14) battles.
The Warriors get back on the court on Tuesday, Nov. 25, when they host their home opener against Misericordia in non-conference action at 6 p.m.
