Henderson’s career night propels Warriors past Lions

HAZLETON, Pa. – Junior Chelsea Henderson (Yonkers, N.Y./Yonkers) notched a career-high 17 points and nine rebounds off the bench, using three coast-to-coast layups off steals to lead the Lycoming College women's basketball team to a 60-49 win over Penn State Hazleton in non-conference action on Tuesday night, Nov. 18.

Playing in front of her hometown crowd, senior Janelle Ziminski (Drums, Pa./Hazleton Area) posted 13 points, six rebounds, three steals and two assists for the Warriors (3-0 overall), but Henderson was the difference maker for the team, as she notched four steals and two blocks to go with the career highs in points and rebounds.

Lycoming has started its season 3-0 for the first time since 1999.

After the Lions (4-1 overall) opened the game with a layup, the Warriors responded with 14 straight points over the next five minutes, starting to open up from the outside, as junior Olivia Manges (York, Pa./West York) hit a 3-pointer before Ziminski canned two.

The Lions closed within six points with 11:28 left, but the Warriors, who scored 20 points in the paint and 17 points off turnover in the half, rattled off another six points in a row, with Henderson knocking out two steals and sailing in for coast-to-coast layups in a row to keep the lead in double figures.

With 6:57 left in the half, Stephanie Guevara hit a free throw to cut the lead to 13 points at 26-13, but the Warriors built the lead back to as many as 21 points, leading 41-20 after a jumper by freshman Cortney Davis (Belford, N.J./Middletown North) with 2:24 left. The Lions closed the half with the last four points to go into the half down 41-24.

In the second half, the Lions threatened multiple times to close within single digits, but the Warriors had an answer each time, with sophomore Nicole Calella (Sandyston, N.J./Kittatinny Regional) hitting a jumper with 7:42 left after the Lions closed within 11 and freshman Shelby Mueller (Collegeville, Pa./Spring-Ford) hitting a jumper with 3:09 left after the Lions had closed within 12. As time wond down, the Lions put together the last five points of the game to make up the final 11-point margin.

Manges finished with seven points and Mueller added six points, as 10 players factored into the scoring, as Lycoming shot 38 percent (26-for-69) for the game.

Alexis Daly posted 15 points and six rebounds and Stephanie Guevaro notched nine points, four steals and three assists. Taylor Cannon posted six points and 11 rebounds and Jacqlyn Siva-Harrison notched seven points, 10 rebounds and two blocks.

The Warriors get back on the court on Saturday, Nov. 22, when they head to Alvernia to open the Commonwealth Conference season at 1 p.m.
