Warriors split pair on second day of Tip-Off

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – After hitting .400 in the first set, the Lycoming College volleyball team cruised to a 3-0 (25-15, 25-18, 25-19) win over Penn College to cap a 3-1 run at the 16th Tip-Off Tournament on Saturday afternoon, Sept. 28. The Warriors fell in the opening match of the day, 3-1 (25-19, 17-25, 25-15, 25-21) to tournament champion, St. Mary's (Md.).
                    
The Warriors (12-7 overall) cruised in the first set against the Wildcats (4-12 overall), firing down 11 of 20 swings en route to the 25-15 win. In the second set, the Warriors knocked down 15 more kills to post a 25-18 win and in the final set, the Warriors broke open a tie score at 15 by closing out the set on a 10-4 run.
 
Freshman Kristine Jahn (Enola, Pa./Cumberland Valley) notched seven kills and a block to lead the Warriors, while both freshman Tayler Whitman (New Cumberland, Pa./Cedar Cliff) and sophomore Bethany Richardson (York, Pa./West York) each added six kills and two blocks. Freshman Haley Deibert (Sacramento, Pa./Tri-Valley) added 16 assists and five digs and junior Amber Seibel (McDonald, Pa./South Fayette) notched nine digs and two aces. Freshman Lauren Fink (York, Pa./West York) also added six digs and three aces.
 
Penn College was led by 12 kills and five digs from Courtney Gernert. Cathleen Aviles added 13 assists and eight digs and Rachel Heller notched 12 digs.
 
In the first match, the Warriors hit a healthy .533 in the second set to post a 25-17 win, but the Seahawks (11-2 overall) hit better than .300 in the other three sets to post the 3-1 win.
 
Senior Shelby Gear (Rochester, N.Y./Gates-Chili) notched 16 kills and hit .433 to lead the Warriors in the match, while Richardson added 12 kills, two aces and two blocks. Senior Katelyn McKillop (Mount Pocono, Pa./Pocono Mountain West) added 41 assists and 10 digs. Fink posted 14 digs and two blocks and junior Kristin Whitehead (Avon, Ohio/Avon) added 10 digs and three aces.
 
Many Goodspeed led the way with 16 kills and four blocks for the Seahawks and Autumn Fisher added 13 kills and five digs. Karliee Vallant added 11 kills and two blocks. Elaina Straub posted 24 assists and three blocks.
 
The Warriors get back on the court on Wednesday, Oct. 2, when they head to Alvernia for a 7 p.m. Commonwealth Conference match.
