WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Senior
Holly Lansberry (Curwensville, Pa./Curwensville Area) became the second player in school history to post two 10-game hitting streaks in a career and sophomore
Caroline Lapano (Harrisburg, Pa./Trinity) wrapped three hits to lead the Lycoming College softball team in Sunday, April 7’s doubleheader with Commonwealth Conference foe Widener, but Widener was able to rally for a 3-2 win in the nightcap after posting a 4-0 win in the first game.
Lansberry posted singles in her last at bat of each game, helping her extend her hitting streak to a team season-long 10 games. As a junior, she tied the school record of 17 games from March 25-April 21. Lansberry joins Susan Leuthner (1994-97), who posted three 10-game hitting streaks in her career, as the only players in school history to post two 10-game streaks.
Lapano finished the doubleheader 3-for-5, including a go-ahead RBI single in the third inning of the second game, but Widener used two sixth-inning runs to sneak away with the 3-2 win.
Down 2-1, the Pride (10-14 overall, 4-8 Commonwealth) used a single and two walks to load the bases with two outs before Heather Forward delivered a two-RBI single to center field.
After the Pride got a first-inning run, the Warriors (10-10 overall, 1-7 Commonwealth) tied the game in the second. Freshman
Ashley Witmer (Lancaster, Pa./Penn Manor) reached on a walk before Lapano laid down a bunt single. After a pop out, a fielder’s choice moved pinch running freshman
Chelsey Poorman (Bellefonte, Pa./Bald Eagle Area) to third, where she scored on a single up the middle by senior
Allyson Marianelli (Old Forge, Pa./Old Forge).
In the third, Lycoming took the lead, as senior
Taylor Lesser (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain) singled to lead off, moved to second on sac bunt and scored on a two-out single that hopped off the pitcher’s rubber by Lapano.
Lesser finished 2-for-4 with a run and Lapano went 2-for-4 with a RBI to lead the Warriors. Forward went 2-for-4 with two RBI and Jackie Korang and Casey Hargadon each added two hits for the Pride.
Korang (3-5) earned the win in relief for the Pride, allowing two hits in 3 1/3 scoreless innings. Liz Carpino earned the save, tossing a 1-2-3 seventh. Lapano (4-6) took the loss for the Warriors, allowing 10 hits, three runs and four walks. She struck out two.
In the first game, Lansberry (4-4) tossed a complete-game six hitter, but Carpino tossed a complete-game six-hit shutout for the Pride, leading them to a 4-0 win.
Carpino (2-4) never let a runner past second base and pitched to contact all game, striking out just one while walking none.
Lansberry also struck out one and walked just two, as she allowed two earned runs in her seven innings of work.
Widener got on the board in the second inning, using a catcher’s interference call and a base hit set up a two-out, two-RBI double to right field from Taylor Church. They added two more runs in the fifth thanks to three straight hits and a sac fly.
Jen Nance led the Pride, going 2-for-4 with a run. Witmer led the Warriors, going 2-for-3.
The Warriors get back on the field on Tuesday, April 9, when they face Susquehanna, who is receiving votes in the NFCA Division III poll, in the annual Breast Cancer Awareness doubleheader. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
