WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Senior
Taylor Lesser (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain) tied the Lycoming College softball team’s career hits record and both senior
Holly Lansberry (Curwensville, Pa./Curwensville Area) and sophomore
Caroline Lapano (Harrisburg, Pa./Trinity) tossed complete games to lead the Warriors to a sweep of Wilkes, posting a 3-1 win in game one and a 5-1 win in game two, at the Shangraw Athletic Complex on Wednesday, April 3.
Lesser tied the school’s career hits record with a fifth-inning base hit in the first game of the doubleheader, posting the 116
th hit of her career to tie the school record set by Jeanine Evans (1997-00).
The Warriors (10-6 overall) rallied with a three-run fourth inning and Lansberry (4-2) notched eight strikeouts and allowed seven hits to post a complete-game 3-1 win in the first game against the Colonels (7-11 overall).
Down 1-0, the Warriors notched a three-run rally in the fourth inning, as senior
Janelle Poorman (Bellefonte, Pa./Bald Eagle Area) started the rally with a leadoff walk. After a sac bunt, sophomore
Nikki Marianelli (Old Forge, Pa./Old Forge) singled into center field to put runners at first and third. A squeeze play bunt by freshman
Kristi Weaver (Milton, Pa./Milton Area) tied the game and after a flyout, senior
Allyson Marianelli (Old Forge, Pa./Old Forge) drove in two runs with a two-out double.
Wilkes left seven runners on base in the game, including leading the bases loaded in the first, as Lansberry got a fly out and strikeout to end the threat. They finally broke through with a double by Laykin Hughes and an RBI single from Dayna Finch in the fourth, but that was as all the scoring they could do against Lansberry, who left three runners stranded in the final three innings while striking out three.
Allyson Marianelli led the Warriors, going 2-for-3 with two RBI. Alex Hoops led the Colonels, going 2-for-3.
Lansberry became the fourth pitcher in school history to reach 40 complete games with the effort. Laykin Hughes (1-6) took the loss, allowing six hits and three runs in six innings. She walked three and struck out two.
In the second game, Lapano (4-4) dealt her third straight win, allowing eight hits and striking out five to lead the Warriors to the 5-1 win.
Lycoming got a break in the first inning, when senior
Amy Cline (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg Area) caught a liner in center field to start a double play and a Wilkes runner didn’t get past second again until the sixth inning.
Lycoming broke through in the third inning, scoring two runs on three errors, with Marianelli and Cline scoring when Lesser reached on an error. In the fifth inning, Lycoming added three more runs, as Lansberry led off the inning with a single. After a flyout, Lesser reached on an error and Poorman delivered a single to load the bases, before freshman
Ashley Witmer (Lancaster, Pa./Penn Manor) delivered a run-clearing double to center field, making it 5-0.
The Colonels got back-to-back doubles to score a run in the sixth, with Hoops hitting an RBI double, but a popout and a groundout ended the threat.
Witmer went 2-for-3 with three RBI and Lansberry went 2-for-4 with a run to lead the Warriors in the second game. Jessalyn Paveletz led the Colonels, going 2-for-2 with a run and double and Katie Brown went 2-for-3.
Brooke Chapin (1-4) took the loss for Wilkes, allowing eight hits and three earned runs in six innings. She struck out one.
The Warriors get back in action on Saturday, April 6, when they head to Alvernia for a 2 p.m. Commonwealth Conference doubleheader.
