Cline sets home run record as Warriors split with Lions

READING, Pa. – Senior Amy Cline (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg Area) set the Lycoming College softball team record for home runs in a season with a first inning blast in her last collegiate game, helping lead the Warriors to an 11-6 win over Albright College to split a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader at the Albright College Softball Field on Saturday, April 27. A late rally helped Albright post a 3-2 win in the first game.
 
The Warriors (15-19 overall, 4-14 Commonwealth) capped the conference season by scoring nine runs in the last three innings to notch an 11-6 win over the Lions, led by Cline’s homer and a five-hit effort from the school’s all-time hits leader, senior Taylor Lesser (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain).
 
The Warriors got on the board in the first inning, as Cline homered to left with one out, giving her six homer on the season, surpassing the previous season-best mark of five set three times. Lesser followed with a single and took second on an error, which helped senior Janelle Poorman (Bellefonte, Pa./Bald Eagle) reach. Sophomore Nikki Marianelli (Old Forge, Pa./Old Forge) followed with an infield single, but Lesser was caught at home on a fielder’s choice. However, Poorman scored on a throwing error to make it 2-0.
 
The Warriors added two more runs in the fourth, as freshman Ashley Witmer (Lancaster, Pa./Penn Manor) reached second on an error and then scored on a single up the middle by senior Allyson Marianelli (Old Forge, Pa./Old Forge). After a strikeout and a groundout, Lesser delivered a single to shortstop to score Marianelli.
 
Albright (10-27 overall, 3-15 Commonwealth) got on the board with a run off an RBI double by Shelby Snyder in the bottom of the inning, but Lycoming got the run back in the top of the fifth, as senior Bethany Garnand (Hagerstown, Md./Smithsburg) walked to lead off and Witmer followed with a single to short before Marianelli singled to score Garnand.
 
The Lions closed within a run in the bottom of the fifth, thanks to a pair of doubles and two more singles, including a two-RBI single from Snyder, but senior Holly Lansberry (Curwensville, Pa./Curwensville Area) came on in relief to get a foul out.
 
The Warriors scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, as Lesser led off with a double and Poorman followed with an RBI double. Nikki Marianelli followed with a single up the middle, allowing sophomore pinch-runner Kali Moeller (Fredericksburg, Va./Chancellor) to score on an error. A sac bunt moved Marianelli to second and she scored on a double by Witmer. The team broke the game open in the seventh, as Lesser led off with a single and Poorman followed with double before Marianelli delivered a three-run bomb to left field, giving Lycoming an 11-4 win.
 
Albright closed within five runs in the bottom of the inning, but Lansberry got a ground out to secure her second save of the year.
 
Lesser finished 5-of-5 with two runs, one RBI and a double, as she finished her career with 135 hits. Poorman went 2-for-5 with two runs, two doubles and an RBI, as she finished her career with a career record 84 RBI. Nikki Marianelli went 3-for-4 with two runs and three RBI, adding a homer and her sister, Allyson, playing in her final collegiate game, went 2-for-4, with two RBI and a run. Witmer also went 2-for-4 with a run and RBI, as Lycoming pounded out 16 hits.
 
Snyder finished 3-for-4 with four RBI and two doubles to lead Albright. Brandy Lagomarsino went 2-for-4 with two runs and Hillary Rodriguez went 2-for-2 with a run and RBI.
 
Sophomore Caroline Lapano (Harrisburg, Pa./Trinity) (6-10) earned the win for Lycoming, allowing four runs and seven hits in 4 2 /3 innings. She struck out one. Lansberry went the final 2 1/3 innings, allowing two hits and an earned run. She also struck out one. Allie Frank (7-15) took the loss for Albright, as she allowed 16 hits and eight earned runs in seven innings. She walked three and struck out two.
 
In the first game, the Lions scored two unearned runs in the sixth inning to post a come-from-behind 3-2 win over the Warriors, who left the bases loaded in the top of the seventh inning.
 
Lycoming got on the board in the second inning, as Nikki Marianelli led off with an infield single. After a sac bunt by Witmer, a walk and a strikeout, Lansberry delivered a single to left field to bring Marianelli in. Natalie Carlucci tied the game in the bottom of the inning with a homer.
 
In the top of the sixth, the Warriors took the lead, as Marianelli blased a double to center field. After a walk and a flyout, her sister drove her in with a single up the middle.
 
However, in the bottom of the inning, a single, two errors and a walk helped Albright score a pair of runs and in the top of the seventh, Lycoming loaded the bases with two outs, but a strikeout ended the threat.
 
Nikki Marianelli went 3-for-4 with two runs to lead the Warriors, who posted seven hits in the game.
 
Albright notched just three hits off Lansberry (7-7), who allowed one earned run and one walk in a six-inning complete game. She struck out four. Frank (7-14) allowed seven hits and two runs in the win for the Lions. She walked five and struck out four.
 
The Warriors finished the 2013 season with 15 wins under fifth-year head coach Dan Lazorka, their most in a season since the 2005 squad went 17-10.
