Heffner reaches 50 wins as Warriors down Blazers, 8-1

FREDERICK, Md. – Senior Cody Heffner (Williamsport, Pa./Muncy) became the fourth player in the past 40 years to reach 50 career combined wins with his final win to lead the Lycoming College men’s tennis team to an 8-1 win over Hood College in Commonwealth Conference action at the Hood Tennis Courts on Saturday, April 27.
 
Heffner teamed with senior Jason Mifsud (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville Area) to post an 8-0 win over Hood’s Luis Cotto and Chad Love at No. 1 doubles for his 49th career win and then added a 6-0, 6-1 win over Cotto at No. 2 singles for his 50th win. Heffner finished his career with 28 singles wins, the second-best mark in school history, and 22 doubles wins, the fourth-most.
 
Mifsud, the Warriors’ all-time wins leader, finished his career in style, adding a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles over Chad Love. He finished his career with a 45-11 singles record, the most wins in school history, and added a 28-26 mark in doubles to finish second in school history. His combined mark of 73-37 is also the best in school history.
 
In addition to the senior duo, freshman Joe Amento (Ambler, Pa./Abington Friends School) and junior Jack Port (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cedar Cliff) combined to post an 8-6 win over Philip Roedig and Raymond Rivera at No. 2 doubles. In singles play, freshman Jelani Martinez (Spring Hill, Fla./New York Military Academy) posted a 6-0, 6-4 win over Roedig at No. 3 and sophomore Joe Rudderow (Blandon, Pa./Fleetwood) won his second straight match with a 6-0, 6-4 win over Jamone Davis at No. 5.
 
The Warriors (3-7 overall, 2-4 Commonwealth) also benefitted from default wins at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles as Hood fell to 0-14 overall and 0-6 in the conference. The Warriors finish the 2012-13 season just one match behind Lebanon Valley for the fourth and final Commonwealth Conference playoff spot.
