Warriors split on second day in South Carolina

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Senior Holly Lansberry (Curwensville, Pa./Curwensville Area) posted three hits and four runs and tossed 8 2/3 innings on Tuesday, March 5, during the National Collegiate Sports Invitational to lead the Lycoming College softball team as the Warriors posted a 7-5 win over Mary Washington before falling in nine innings to Mount Aloysius, 4-3, in the nightcap at the Central Park Sports Complex.
 
Lansberry scored two runs in each game, saved the win over Mary Washington and tossed eight innings, allowing seven hits, two earned runs and striking out 11 in a no-decision against Mount Aloysius.
 
The Warriors busted open the first game of the day against Mary Washington with seven runs in the first two innings en route to a 7-5 win.
 
In the first inning, the Warriors responded to a two-run Eagle first with two runs of their own. Lansberry and senior Taylor Lesser (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain) each drew walks and advanced on a wild pitch before senior Janelle Poorman (Bellefonte, Pa./Bald Eagle Area) drilled a two-RBI single to center field.
 
In the second, the Warriors got started when freshman Elisa Novak (Ambler, Pa./Germantown Academy) drew a walk before freshman Ashley Burger (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville) singled. Lansberry and senior Amy Cline (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg Area) each followed with singles. Lesser reached on an error before Poorman walked, setting up a sac fly from freshman Ashley Witmer (Lancaster, Pa./Penn Manor). Another walk led to an infield single by senior Allyson Marianelli (Old Forge, Pa./Old Forge) to bring in the fifth run of the inning.
 
The Eagles scored a single run in the fourth and added two in the seventh to close within 7-5 before Lansberry entered and got a fly out and strikeout to end the rally and earn the save.
 
Lansberry and Lesser each scored twice to lead the Warriors and Poorman posted three RBI. Hannah Williams and Alex Tenney each had two hits and a RBI for the Eagles.
 
Freshman Kristi Weaver (Milton, Pa./Milton Area) (1-0) won her first career start, allowing nine hits, five runs and three walked in 6 1/3 innings. Annie Blaine (0-2) took the loss for Mary Washington, allowing six runs in 1 1/3 innings.
 
In the nightcap, Mount Aloysius scratched a run across in each of the international tiebreaker innings to outlast the Warriors, 4-3, in nine innings.
 
The Mounties (2-1) got on the board in the fifth inning with two runs, but the Warriors got even in the top of the sixth, as Lansberry singled to center setting up a home run from Cline, her second of the season.
 
In the eighth, each team scratched a run across, as Lycoming used a sac bunt and a groundout to score Lansberry, who started the inning on second. The Mounties, though, shut down Lycoming in the ninth to earn the win.
 
Lansberry led the Warriors with two runs and two of the team’s five hits. Jalisa Westover led the Mounties with two hits and Emilee Gearheart added two RBI.
 
Sophomore Caroline Lapano (Harrisburg, Pa./Trinity) (1-1) took the loss for Lycoming, allowing a run and two hits. Taylor Mansfield earned the win for Mount Aloysius, tossing the last three innings for the Mounties.
 
The Warriors get back in action on Wednesday, March 6, with two more games at the National Collegiate Sports Invitational, taking on Mount Saint Mary (N.Y.) at 9:30 a.m. before a rematch with Mount Aloysius at 2:30 p.m.
