Warriors fall in opener at DeSales

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Senior Julia Antonelli (Hanover, Pa./New Oxford) led the Lycoming College women's basketball team with 18 points and six rebounds, but DeSales overcame a two-point halftime deficit to post a 65-54 win in the opening round of the Morgan Stanley Tip-Off Tournament at Billera Hall on Friday night, Nov. 15.
 
Freshman point guard Nicole Calella (Sandyston, N.J./Kittatinny Regional) posted seven points, nine rebounds and four assists and junior Ali Derr (New Columbia, Pa./Milton Area) added nine points and five rebounds for the Warriors (0-1 overall).
 
DeSales had a trio of players finish in double figures, with Sondrine Glovas posting 18 points, five rebounds, four assists and seven assists.  Alex Suk notched 16 points and 13 rebounds and Alexiah Grant added 12 points, six steals and four rebounds.
 
With the score tied at 16 midway through the first half, the Warriors scored seven straight points over the next five minutes, with senior Victoria Kowalski (Mahopac, N.Y./Lakeland) starting the run with a layup and Antonelli capping it with an old-fashioned 3-point play. DeSales was able to close within two at the break by scoring the last four points of the half.
 
In the second half, the Warriors kept the lead for the first eight minutes of the half before a jumper by Alexiah Grant made it 40-39 with 11:17 left. The Warriors got the lead back with three straight points from Antonelli, but a 9-1 run over the next five minutes by the Bulldogs gave them a 49-43 lead with 5:04 left after a fastbreak bucket from Alexiah Grant.
 
The Warriors worked back within two points thanks to a jumper by sophomore Chelsea Henderson (Yonkers, N.Y./Yonkers) and a fastbreak steal and bucket by sophomore Olivia Manges (York, Pa./West York) made it 51-49 with 3:06 left.
 
However, the Bulldogs closed the game on a 14-5 run to take away the victory.
 
Lycoming shot 42 percent (24-for-57) from the field, but DeSales held a 46-40 advantage on the glass despite shooting 23-for-69 (33 percent) from the field. The Bulldogs also finished 18-of-25 from the line while Lycoming shot just 6-of-12.
 
The Warriors wrap up the Morgan Stanley Tip-Off on Saturday, Nov. 16, when they face Eastern at 2 p.m. in Billela Hall.
