WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – The Lycoming College wrestling team took four matches by decision and held a three-point lead after seven bouts, but King’s College was able to rally with three wins worth 12 points to wrap up a 21-12 win in a non-conference dual meet on Thursday night, Jan. 24, at Lamade Gym.
Lycoming (4-6 overall) lost five matches by decision by a combined 13 points to King’s (4-7 overall) before the Monarchs’ heavyweight Peter Dwyer posted a pin to end the meet.
The Warriors got on the board in the 133-pound match, as junior
Zack Finn (East Rochester, N.Y./East Rochester) posted a 9-5 win over Aaron Perez, as he countered two early takedowns by Perez with a pair of reversals before taking control with a pair of his own takedowns in the final two periods.
Sophomore
Caleb Willey (Towanda, Pa./Towanda Area) followed with a 4-3 win over 12-5 DeMarquis Holley at 141 pounds to give Lycoming a 6-3 lead and improve to 18-12 on the season. Willey fell behind early, allowing a takedown before getting an escape quickly and getting his own takedown as time expired in the match. Both traded escapes later in the match to round out the scoring.
Sophomore
Brian Watkins (Bear Gap, Pa./Southern Columbia) improved to 16-8 overall with a 5-2 win over Gordon Custer at 157 pounds, using first- and third-period takedowns to control the match.
At 174 pounds, junior
Johnathan Secor (Pompton Lakes, N.J./Pompton Lakes) posted a 4-3 win over Ahmed Burton, countering a first-period takedown by getting an escape and then scoring a takedown in the second period to take a 3-2 lead. In the third period, he was able to stay on top for a majority of the period before allowing a late escape, scoring the riding time point to improve to 13-12 on the season.
However, after taking the 12-9 lead with the win by Secor, the Monarchs earned a pair of narrow decisions, one by two points and one by one before Dwyer rounded out the match with a pin.
The Warriors get back in action on Saturday, Feb. 2, when they head to No. 8 Wilkes for a quad meet, facing McDaniel at 11 a.m., Trinity (Conn.) at 1 p.m., and the host Colonels at 3 p.m.
