WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Playing its second game in as many days, the Lycoming College women’s soccer team will take the short trip across town for its second trophy game of the year, this time facing off with Penn College in the Battle for the Lumber at the Penn College Soccer Field on Thursday, Sept. 20, at 6 p.m.
The rivalry between the two schools, especially in soccer, is just reaching its fruition, as the women’s soccer teams have played four times, with the Warriors winning all four games, including the first two Battle for the Lumbers. However, due to the schools proximity, it has already become a natural and heated rivalry.
The trophy game is named in honor of the history of the city of Williamsport as the Lumber Capitol of the World in the late 1800s. Perhaps appropriately, the trophies will travel through Millionaire’s Row en route to the Penn College Soccer Field. Millionaire’s Row, located on Fourth Street in Williamsport, is the most visible remaining link to that period, as large 100-plus year-old mansions line the street, showing the unique prosperity that the city embraced during that period.
The Battle for the Lumber will be held at Penn College for the first time, as it was hosted by Lycoming in 2010 and played at the neutral site Balls Mills Soccer Complex in 2011. In the 2011 matchup, the Warriors posted a 3-0 win, with
Jussae Hanford ’12 scoring twice in the second half and
Kelly Prendergast ’12 also notching a first-half goal to help lead the Warriors.
Lycoming (1-5-1 overall) enters the Battle for the Lumber looking to rebound from a loss at No. 21/24 Misericordia on Wednesday, Sept. 19. Freshman
Kaitlyn Gulotta (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll) has led the team offensively, posting two goals, and senior
Leslie Kester (Lititz, Pa./Manheim Township) has added two assists.
Penn College (4-1 overall) has had a solid start to the season, defeating NCAA Division III opponents in Baptist Bible and Mt. Aloysius and a Division II opponent in Washington Adventist. Valeria Passalacqua has led the team with six goals and 13 points and both Kiersten Steer and Kaileen Dailey are tied for the team lead with two assists. Reda Vermilya has notched a 1.03 goals-against average and accumulated a 4-1 record.
