WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Three first-half goals, two on assists by senior
Leslie Kester (Lititz, Pa./Manheim Township), helped lift the Lycoming College women’s soccer team to its first win of the season, 5-0, over Keystone on Wednesday afternoon, Sept. 12, at the Shangraw Athletic Complex.
The Warriors (1-4 overall) got on the board in the eighth minute, as junior
Olivia Hanner (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville) served a ball on a free kick over the Giants’ defense, where a streaking freshman
Kaitlyn Gulotta (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll) connected and fired a shot into the left corner.
Freshman
Riley Zimmerman (Port Royal, Pa./Juniata) gave Lycoming a 2-0 advantage in the 25
th minute, when Kester served a ball in on a corner kick and Zimmerman headed it off the crossbar and the goalkeeper before it crossed the goal line. Sophomore
Emily Truett (Hughesville, Pa./Hughesville) added the third goal of the half in the 44
th minute on a low rolling shot into the left corner on another give from Kester.
Lycoming, which took 29 shots in the game, its most since firing 37 at St. Elizabeth on Oct. 6, 2010, kept the pressure on in the second half, as sophomore
Shannon Pipes (Asbury, N.J./Voorhees) scored her first career goal on a breakaway. Freshman
Kalynn Newman (Hughesville, Pa./Hughesville) added an assist on the play.
Junior
Spencer Larson (Edgewater, Md./South River) scored her first goal since 2010 to round out the scoring, as she knocked in a rebound of her shot off the crossbar in the 64
th minute, helping the Warriors reach the five-goal mark for the first time since beating St. Elizabeth, 5-0, in 2010.
Sophomore
Sam Stropko (Sayre, Pa./Athens) earned her first career win in net, making two saves in the first half. Senior
Jennifer Basch (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove) made two stops in the second half and junior
Briana Riddick (Slatington, Pa./Northern Lehigh) also made a defensive save.
Kester, with her two assists, became the 16
th player in school history to reach 20 career points. She now has seven career goals and six assists.
Katelyn Coon made 10 stops in the game for Keystone (2-3 overall). The Giants took seven shots in the game and had four corner kicks while Lycoming had eight.
Lycoming will look to stay on the winning side of the ledger on Saturday, Sept. 15, when they host SUNY Geneseo at the Shangraw Athletic Complex at 11 a.m.
