READING, Pa. – Freshman Abbey Smith (Towanda, Pa./Towanda Area) won both her singles and doubles matches on Saturday, April 28, for the Lycoming College women’s tennis team, but Alvernia University won four singles matches to edge out Lycoming, 5-4, in Commonwealth Conference action at the Governor Mifflin Courts.
 
The Warriors (2-9 overall, 1-5 Commonwealth) got off to a strong start, winning two of the three doubles matches, as Smith and junior Adriana Rivera (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) posted an 8-4 win over Kellie O’Donnell and Maygan Henzie at No. 3 and freshman Shannon Sheridan (Danville, Pa./Danville) and sophomore Kathy Jacobs (Milton, Pa./Milton Area) added an 8-6 win over Jennifer Innamorato and Laura Ehnes at No. 2.
 
In singles play, junior Megan Gardner (Hughesville, Pa./Hughesville Area) posted a 6-3, 6-3 win over Jennifer Petrilla at No. 1, but the Crusaders (8-5 overall, 3-3 Commonwealth) won the next four flights to take the match and earn a playoff bid. Smith wrapped up the match for the Warriors with a 4-6, 6-2, 10-6 superset tiebreak win over Henzie at No. 6.
