Box Score GRANTHAM, Pa. – A pair of close matches and an injury all went the way of Messiah College on Thursday afternoon, April 26, helping Messiah outlast the Lycoming College women’s tennis team, 7-2, in a key Commonwealth Conference clash.
The Warriors (2-8 overall, 1-4 Commonwealth) tied the match at one with a win at No. 1 doubles, as junior
Megan Gardner (Hughesville, Pa./Hughesville Area) and junior
Emily Zangara (Williamsport, Pa./Loyalsock Township) downed Erin Ipsen and Sarah Brookhart, 8-4.
However, the Falcons (6-8 overall, 2-3 Commonwealth) won the doubles point, thanks to a tiebreaker at No. 3, as Jennifer Kitlan and Michelle Curtis edged out junior
Adriana Rivera (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) and freshman
Abbey Smith (Towanda, Pa./Towanda Area), 9-8 (1).
In singles play, Messiah won by default at No. 2 due to an injury to Zangara, and Ipsen edged out Gardner, 4-6, 6-1, 10-8, in a superset tiebreaker. Sophomore
Kathy Jacobs (Milton, Pa./Milton Area) posted the lone win in singles for the Warriors, posting a 6-4, 6-1 win over Ellen Harpold.
The Warriors wrap up the season at Alvernia on Saturday, April 28, at 1 p.m.
