LOYALSOCK TOWNSHIP, Pa. – Sophomore Ellen Phillips (Muncy, Pa./Muncy) came back from down three games in the first set to win five straight games and post the win at No. 5 singles to help the Lycoming College women’s tennis team comeback to down Albright, 5-4, in the team’s Commonwealth Conference opener on Thursday, April 12, at Bruce Henry Park.
 
Phillips fell behind, 5-2, in the first set, but won five straight games before posting a 6-2 win in the second set to seal the 7-5, 6-2 win over Melissa Carberry at No. 5 singles.
 
The Warriors (2-4 overall, 1-0 Commonwealth) got out to a solid start by winning two of the three doubles matches, with junior Megan Gardner (Hughesville, Pa./Hughesville) and junior Emily Zangara (Williamsport, Pa./Loyalsock Township) posting a critical 9-7 win over Victoria Foanio and Christina Peacock at No. 1 and junior Adriana Rivera (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) and freshman Abbey Smith (Towanda, Pa./Towanda Area) posting an 8-4 win over Abby Walke and Nazma Ali at No. 3.
 
However, the Lions (5-7 overall, 1-1 Commonwealth) won the first three singles matches to take a 4-2 lead before Lycoming mounted its comeback. Rivera notched a 6-4, 6-3 win over Ligeia Evans and sophomore Kathy Jacobs (Milton, Pa./Milton Area) followed with a 6-1, 7-5 win over Peacock to tie the match, setting up Phillips’ deciding win.
 
The Warriors get back on the court on Saturday, April 14, when they head to Arcadia for a Commonwealth Conference match at 12 p.m.
