WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – A strikeout with the bases loaded for the second out in the bottom of the sixth inning signified the end of the game, as darkness halted the Lycoming College softball team’s comeback and helped King’s come up with a 4-2, five-inning win to sweep the doubleheader after taking the first game, 8-2, in non-conference action at the Shangraw Athletic Complex on Thursday afternoon, March 29.

After an inside-the-park homer by Brittny Baynes helped the Monarchs (13-5 overall) take a 5-2 lead in the top of the sixth inning, the Warriors rallied in the bottom half, with sophomore Allyson Marianelli (Old Forge, Pa./Old Forge) starting the rally with a one-out double. Junior Holly Lansberry (Curwensville, Pa./Curwensville Area) and junior Amy Cline (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg Area) each followed with walks to load the bases. Junior Taylor Lesser (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain) dropped a single down the right field line to score a run, but a strikeout followed and with darkness falling, the game was called.

Due to NCAA rules, the final score reverted back to the end of the fifth inning and all stats from the sixth inning are unofficial.

Lycoming (5-11 overall) took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning, as junior Brie Braga (New Bedford, Mass./New Bedford) led off by drilling a double off the top of the left-center field fence. Freshman Caroline Lapano (Harrisburg, Pa./Trinity) followed with an RBI single down the left field line. After a strikeout, freshman Kristin Steiner (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) dropped a single to right field, moving Lapano to third, where she scored on an illegal pitch.

King’s rallied from behind, using three hits and two errors to score four runs in the top of the fifth inning to secure the win.

Cline, Lesser and Steiner each had two of Lycoming’s nine hits. Amanda Cardone and Nicolette Pizzo each posted two hits and a RBI for the Monarchs.

Braga (2-4) took the loss, pitching 4 1/3 innings and allowing two earned runs and six hits. She walked three and struck out three. Karissa Kross (3-0) earned the win for the Monarchs, tossing four innings and allowing five hits and a run.

In the first game, King’s scored eight runs from the second to fourth innings and posted 13 hits to post an 8-2 win.

Rachel Zinni and Jenn Harnischfeger each had three hits, two runs, a double and two RBI to lead the Monarchs and Cardone added a double, two hits and two RBI.

Lycoming got its pair of runs in the fourth inning, as Braga led off with a walk and freshman Nikki Marianelli (Old Forge, Pa./Old Forge) followed with a single. After a pair of outs, freshman Kali Moeller (Frederickburg, Va./Chancellor) drilled a double that rolled to the wall in center to score both runners.

The Warriors were led by both Lansberry and Cline, who each had two of the team’s 10 hits in the game.

Lansberry (2-5) took the loss for Lycoming, allowing 13 hits and seven earned runs in the complete game. She struck out five. Robyn Klingerman (3-0) earned the win for the Monarchs, tossing four innings and allowing two earned runs. She struck out one.
