Poorman’s homers not enough as Warriors drop pair to Cougars

DALLAS, Pa. – Junior Janelle Poorman (Bellefonte, Pa./Bald Eagle Area) blasted a home run ine ach game to become the first player in school history to reach double figures in a career while moving within one bomb of the single-season record, but the Lycoming College softball team fell in both ends of a doubleheader to Misericordia, 7-3 and 7-4, on Sunday, March 25, at Anderson Field.
 
The Cougars (12-8 overall) jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first two innings of the first game en route to a 7-3 win, using four hits and two errors to score the runs. The team added single tallies in the fourth, on a solo homer from Mallory Getts, and another in the fifth to take a 7-0 lead.
 
The Warriors (5-7 overall) fought back in the seventh, as junior Amy Cline (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg Area) and junior Taylor Lesser (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain) singling with two outs, with Cline scoring on Lesser’s single before Poorman hit her 10th career blast. Junior Nikki Marianelli (Old Forge, Pa./Old Forge Area) followed with a double, but a strikeout ended the game.
 
Seven different Warriors had a hit in the first game, while Getts led the Cougars by going 4-for-4 with three runs and four RBI. Mindy LaBarre also added two hits and a run.
 
Junior Brie Braga (New Bedford, Mass./New Bedford) (2-3) took the loss for the Warriors, allowing eight hits and three earned runs in four innings. She struck out three. Caitlin Cromley earned the win after allowing four hits in 5 1/3 innings of scoreless work. She struck out six and walked two.
 
A four-run bottom of the fourth inning helped Misericordia overcome a three-run deficit in the second game and take a 7-4 decision.
 
Lycoming jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning, as sophomore Abbi Miller (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport Area) hit a one-out single, moved to second on a two-out walk by Nikki Marianelli before scoring on a single by junior Allyson Marianelli (Old Forge, Pa./Old Forge Area).
 
In the fourth inning, Miller again started the rally, doubling to right field with one out, before pinch-running freshman Kali Moeller (Fredericksburg, Va./Chancellor) took third on a wild pitch and scored on a single by freshman Katie Pugh (Sykesville, Md./Century). The Marianelli sisters followed with singles and an error helped bring Pugh around.
 
However, the Cougars took the lead in the fourth, as a three-run homer from Megan Hardy tied the game and a double by Getts gave Misericordia a 4-3 lead. The Warriors tied the game in the top of the fifth thanks to a homer from Poorman, but Misericordia scored a run in the bottom of the fifth and two more in the sixth.
 
Miller led the Warriors with two hits, a double and a run and Allyson Marianelli also went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Getts went 2-for-4 with three RBI for the Cougars and Megan Hardy went 2-for-2 with a run and three RBI. Amanda Polaha added three hits and a homer.
 
Junior Holly Lansberry (Curwensville, Pa./Curwensville Area) (2-4) pitched a complete game for the Warriors, allowing 10 hits and six earned runs. She struck out four. Cromley earned the win in relief, allowing two hits and a run in 3 2/3 innings. She struck out five.
 
The Warriors get back on the diamond on Monday, March 26, when they head to Scranton for a 4 p.m. doubleheader.
