WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – The Lycoming College softball team pounded out 14 hits in Thursday, March 22’s Commonwealth Conference doubleheader against Elizabethtown, but the Blue Jays snuck past the Warriors in each game, 3-2 and 5-2, to spoil the Warriors’ home opener at the Shangraw Athletic Complex.
The Warriors (5-5 overall, 0-2 Commonwealth) built a 2-0 lead in the first game, scoring a run in each of the first two innings. Junior
Holly Lansberry (Curwensville, Pa./Curwensville Area) led off with a single and a sac bunt and a groundout moved her to third, where she scored on a single to center field by junior
Janelle Poorman (Bellefonte, Pa./Bald Eagle Area). In the second inning, sophomore
Abbi Miller (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport Area) reached on an infield single and moved to second on a sac bunt. After a lineout, back-to-back singles from junior
Allyson Marianelli (Old Forge, Pa./Old Forge) and Lansberry drove in Miller.
The Blue Jays (10-8 overall, 2-0 Commonwealth) fought back with two runs in the fifth inning, though, thanks to three hits and doubles from Kaylee Werner and Amanda Sheckard. In the seventh inning, the Blue Jays scratched across a run across as a leadoff walk and two singles pushed Werner across.
Lansberry went 2-for-4 with a run and RBI to lead the Warriors and Miller also posted two hits and a run. Courtney Comstock and Julie Sebastian posted two hits for the Blue Jays and Werner scored twice.
Junior
Brie Braga (New Bedford, Mass./New Bedford) (2-2) took the loss for Lycoming, allowing six hits and three runs in the complete game. Sebastian (7-3) earned the win for Elizabethtown, pitching seven innings and allowing eight hits and two runs.
In the second game, a three-run homer from Sebastian in the fifth inning helped make up the final margin of 5-2.
The Warriors jumped out to a 1-0 lead as junior
Amy Cline (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg Area) singled to center field and junior
Taylor Lesser (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain) pounded a double off the wall to drive her in. However, the Blue Jays responded with the next five runs, tying the game in the second and taking the lead with a single run in the fourth before Sebastian’s fifth-inning homer.
The Warriors rallied in the seventh, as junior
Bethany Garnand (Hagerstown, Md./Smithsburg) lined a single up the middle with one out, took second on a wild pitch and moved to third on an infield single by freshman
Caroline Lapano (Harrisburg, Pa./Trinity). She scored on a fielder’s choice.
Laura Tomasetti (4-3) tossed a complete-game six-hitter for the Blue Jays, allowing six hits and two runs. Lansberry (2-3) took the loss for the Warriors, allowing six hits and two runs in 3 2/3 innings.
The Warriors get back on the field on Saturday, March 24, when they play conference rival Albright at 1 p.m. at Robert L. Shagraw Athletic Complex.
