NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Junior
Janelle Poorman (Bellefonte, Pa./Bald Eagle Area) went 4-for-6 with three runs, three RBI and a homer on Wednesday, March 14, as the Lycoming College softball team split its pair of games at the National Collegiate Softball Invitational, falling 7-5 to Division II Concord before downing Eureka, 12-0, in a run-rule shortened game at Central Park.
In the late afternoon game, the Warriors (5-1 overall) broke open the contest with an eight-run fourth inning and junior
Brie Braga (New Bedford, Mass./New Bedford) tossed a two-hitter as they cruised to a 12-0 five-inning win over Eureka (1-5 overall).
Lycoming got on the board in the second inning as Poorman hit her second homer of the season with a blast to left field. The Warriors added two more runs in the third inning, as junior
Allyson Marianelli (Old Forge, Pa./Old Forge) led off with a single to center field. An error helped junior
Holly Lansberry (Curwensville, Pa./Curwensville) reach base and a sac bunt moved the runners to second and third. A sac fly scored Marianelli before Poorman singled to left to drive in Lansberry.
The Warriors broke the game open in the fourth with eight runs on four hits and two errors. Freshman
Hannah Smith (Wellsboro, Pa./Wellsboro Area) was hit by a pitch and freshman
Kristin Steiner (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) followed by walking. An error loaded the bases before Marianelli drove in Smith with a single. Lansberry walked to bring in another run before junior
Amy Cline (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg Area) singled up the middle to make it 6-0. After a fielder’s choice, Poorman hit an infield single to score a run and a single by Braga drove in two runs and a groundout up the middle scored the eighth run of the frame.
In the fifth inning, Lycoming tacked on its 12
th run, as freshman
Taylor Thoman (Odessa, N.Y./Odessa-Montour Central) walked to lead off. A one-out error moved her to second before she scored on a fielder’s choice and an error.
Braga (2-0) allowed just two runners to reach second during the game and she retired the last seven batters of the game, striking out seven and walking one in her five innings.
Poorman went 3-for-3 with two runs, a homer and three RBI and Allyson Marianelli went 2-for-2 with a run and RBI to lead the Warriors.
Both Jaylynn Stewart and Carissa Elig led the Red Devils with a hit and a walk. Karsen Grager took the loss, allowing 3 1/3 innings, eight hits and six earned runs.
In the early game, Concord used three run third and sixth innings to post a 7-5 win over the Warriors, snapping the team’s four-game winning streak.
After allowing a second-inning run, Lycoming tied the game in the bottom of the inning, as Poorman was hit by a pitch to lead off. After a sac bunt, sophomore
Abbi Miller (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport Area) drilled an RBI single to center field.
However, Concord (8-8 overall) took control with the two three-run innings to take a 7-1 lead before Lycoming closed the gap with a four-run sixth inning. Cline led off with a single and after a fielder’s choice, Poorman added a single to left field. After another fielder’s choice, Miller walked to load the bases and freshman
Katie Pugh (Sykesville, Md./Century) cleared them with a three-RBI single to left field. Pugh came around to score on an error, but the Warriors left two runners stranded in the frame.
Cline led the Warriors, going 2-for-4 and Pugh posted three RBI.
Lacey McDougall led Concord, going 3-for-4 with two runs and Jessica Seymour went 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI.
Lansberry (2-1) tossed six innings in the loss, allowing 10 hits and four earned runs. She walked three and struck out seven.
Stephanie Harper earned the win for the Mountain Lions, tossing 5 2/3 innings, allowing seven hits and four earned runs. Tamara Smith earned the save, tossing 1 1/3 innings to close the game.
Lycoming wraps up its time at the National Collegiate Sports Invitational on Thursday, March 15, as it plays two Division II opponents, facing Clarion at 1:30 p.m. and Concord at 3:30 p.m.
