WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Two Lycoming College wrestling seniors,
Stephen Hinton (Montclair, Va./Forest Park) and
Russ Korbul (Asbury, N.J./North Hunterdon) kept their winning streaks alive on Friday night, Jan. 20, at Lamade Gym, but the Warriors couldn’t overcome a solid Messiah mid-weight lineup, falling, 25-10, to the 21
st-ranked team in the nation.
Hinton got the Warriors off to a good start at 125 pounds, posting 10 first-period points thanks to two 3-point near falls, as he notched a 13-1 major decision against Danny Lethbridge. It was the senior’s seventh-straight win, setting a new career high.
After a pair of Warrior losses, freshman
Lucas Wisniewski (Conshohocken, Pa./Plymouth-Whitemarsh) scored first and second period takedowns en route to a 5-1 win over Chris Hardenberg at 149 pounds to tie the meet at seven.
However, the Falcons won the next four bouts, claiming 15 points to clinch the match before Korbul stepped up and notched a 9-3 win over Charles Jones at 197 pounds. After Jones notched an early first-period takedown, Korbul responded by getting a quick escape and adding takedowns of his own in all three periods en route to his ninth straight win, also a career long.
The Warriors will travel to Grantham, Pa., on Saturday, Jan. 21, for the Messiah Open.
