2012 Budd Whitehill Duals Central
WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Seniors
Stephen Hinton (Montclair, Va./Forest Park) and
Russ Korbul (Asbury, N.J./North Hunterdon) completed perfect runs through the 2012 Budd Whitehill Division III Wrestling Duals as the Lycoming College wrestling team posted a 22-15 win over King’s before falling to Trine, 26-12, in consolation round matches on Saturday, Jan. 14, at Lamade Gym.
Hinton, a 125-pounder, and Korbul, a 197-pounder, each added one more win in their only meets of the day to finish the duals with perfect 4-0 marks to lead the Warriors (4-6 overall).
The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, ranked 12
th nationally, won its second Whitehill National Duals title, beating No. 22 Springfield, 27-9, in the championship match. No. 24 Ohio Northern downed No. 7 SUNY Cortland, 20-19, in the third-place match. No. 11 York defeated No. 21 Messiah, 22-18, in the fifth-place match and No. 23 Wabash defeated No. 25 Wisconsin-Stevens Point, 18-17 on criteria B, in the seventh-place match.
With six wins in the morning bout, the Warriors came from behind to beat King’s, 22-15.
The Warriors started out the match hot, as senior
Stephen Hinton (Montclair, Va./Forest Park) posted an 8-0 major decision at 125 pounds and sophomore
Zach Finn (East Rochester, N.Y./East Rochester) added a 5-3 win over Travis Boardman at 133 pounds. However, the Monarchs scored the next nine points in two matches before freshman
Brian Watkins (Bear Gap, Pa./Southern Columbia) posted an 8-1 decision against Gordon Custer at 157 pounds to give Lycoming the lead back for good.
Sophomore
Greg Wetzel (Pleasant Valley, N.Y./Arlington) posted a 6-0 decision over Zach Grey at 165 pounds before a loss at 174 brought King’s within a point at 13-12. However, junior
Tyler Cunningham (Haddon Township, N.J./Haddon Township) posted a 5-1 win over Ahmed Burton at 184 pounds. A forfeit at 197 pounds secured the win for the Warriors.
The Warriors picked up three wins in the nightcap against Trine, led by a pin from junior
C.J. Conger (Egg Harbor Township, N.J./Absegami) at 133 points against Taylor Hanthorne with 12 seconds remaining. Korbul added a 10-3 win over Makensie Green at 197 pounds and junior
Chris Geisel (Gibbsboro, N.J./Eastern Regional) added a 3-2 win over Jim West at heavyweight.
The Warriors get back on the mat Friday, Jan. 20, when they host No. 21 Messiah College on Friday, Jan. 20 at 7 p.m.
