WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – A lightning strike that caused a half-hour delay wasn’t the only electric moment that the Lycoming College women’s soccer team saw on Wednesday afternoon at the Shangraw Athletic Complex, as senior
Jussae Hanford (Hughesville, Pa./Hughesville) posted two second-half goals to lift the Warriors to a 2-1 win over King’s (Pa.) in non-conference action.
After the lightning delay with seven minutes left in the first half, the Warriors (2-7 overall) were able to get out to a strong start in the second half after taking just two shots in the first half. In the 48
th minute, sophomore
Briana Riddick (Slatington, Pa./Northern Lehigh) turned from the center of the field and released a give for Hanford, who beat her first defender, then cut inside to evade a closing back and fired a shot high into the upper left corner from 20 yards out to give the Warriors the lead.
Fifteen minutes later, Hanford got another opportunity when she lifted a shot high into the right corner after the ball came to her in the midst of a scrum about 15 yards from the goal.
King’s (2-6 overall) cut into the lead in the 82
nd minute when Jade Zuniga found an opportunity by streaking down the left sideline and firing a shot off Lycoming junior keeper
Jennifer Basch (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove) before rebounding the shot and putting it in the right corner.
Basch made six saves in net for the Warriors, as she stared down 10 Monarch shots. Lauren Duguid made three stops for the Monarchs, as the Warriors took seven shots in the game.
The Warriors next hit the road for Alvernia to open the Commonwealth Conference season on Saturday, Oct. 1 at 1 p.m.
