WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – A light afternoon rain and a pair of three-set matches forced the conclusion of Thursday, Sept. 22, 2011’s match between the Lycoming College women’s tennis team and Susquehanna University to be played under the lights at Bruce Henry Park. It was only fitting, then, that the match went about as far as it can go, with a three-set match at No. 1 singles clinching a 5-4 win for the Crusaders.
The Warriors (0-2 overall) took one of the three doubles matches after the start of the match was delayed by an hour due to the rain. Sophomore Megan Gardner (Hughesville, Pa./Hughesville) and freshman Dani Nazaruk (Duncansville, Pa./Guilfoyle Catholic) notched an 8-5 win over Jessica Klinger and Julia Lerner at No. 1 doubles, but the Crusaders (2-0 overall) took a 2-1 lead with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles.
After a win at No. 3 singles, the Crusaders took a 3-1 lead, but sophomore Ellen Phillips (Muncy, Pa./Muncy) followed with a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles and freshman Emily Zangara (Williamsport, Pa./Loyalsock Township) tied the match with a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 2 against Klinger.
The Crusaders posted a win at No. 5 to take a 4-3 lead, but the Warriors came back to tie the match at five when freshman Shannon Sheridan (Danville, Pa./Danville) won her first career match with a 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 win over Abby Hess as she won four straight games to close out the match.
Lerner narrowly escaped a rally from Gardner in the deciding match at No. 1 singles, as Gardner came back from 5-3 down in the second set by getting a break and then notching a tiebreaker win, 7-4. In the third set, Gardner came back from 5-2 down to post another break, but Lerner was able to close out the match on Gardner’s serve, taking the set, 6-4.
The Warriors get back on the court when they head to King’s for an 11 a.m. match on Saturday, Sept. 24.
