LOYALSOCK TOWNSHIP, Pa. – Down a break in the third set on the lone court still playing, sophomore Adriana Rivera (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) stepped up for the Warriors, getting a break herself before gutting out a 7-5 third-set win to clinch a 5-4 Commonwealth Conference win by the Lycoming College women’s tennis team against Alvernia University at Bruce Henry Park on Saturday, April 9.

Rivera fell behind in the No. 6 singles match to Katherine Ghiorzi, falling in the first set, 4-6 before coming back to post a 6-1 win in the second. In the third, Rivera was broken by Ghiorzi in the first game and fell behind, 2-0, before coming back with three straight wins. Each player grittily held their serve from there before, with a 6-5 lead, Rivera won four straight points on Ghiorzi’s serve to clinch the win.

The Warriors (4-5 overall, 2-2 Commonwealth), in the process, won a key match to keep its Commonwealth Conference playoff hopes alive, moving into a tie for the fourth and final playoff slot with Alvernia (8-3 overall, 1-1 Commonwealth). The win was Lycoming’s first in two meetings against the Crusaders, as Alvernia won the first meeting, 9-0, in Reading, Pa., on Oct. 10, 2009.

Lycoming got off to a good start by winning two of the three doubles matches, as sophomore Megan Gardner (Hughesville, Pa./Hughesville) and senior Rebecca Reynolds (South Williamsport, Pa./South Williamsport) posted an 8-3 win over Jenny McKee and Kayla Morgan at No. 1 and Rivera and freshman Kathy Jacobs (Milton, Pa./Milton) added an 8-5 win over Ghiorzi and Brittany Veith at No. 3.

In singles play, the Crusaders tied the match at two with a win at No. 2 and added wins at No. 1 and No. 3, but the Warriors fought back, as Jacons notched a 6-1, 6-3 win over Jennifer Innamorato at No. 4 and Phillips added a 6-4, 6-0 win over Laura Ehnes at No. 5 to tie the match and set up the showdown at No. 6.

The Warriors host Messiah on Thursday, April 14, looking to stay in contention for a spot in the Commonwealth Conference semifinals. First serve is set for 3:30 p.m.
