WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. –
A two-RBI single up the middle in the bottom of the seventh inning from sophomore Janelle Poorman (Bellefonte, Pa./Bald Eagle Area) lifted the Lycoming College softball team to one of the biggest upsets in school history on Thursday afternoon, April 21, at the Shangraw Athletic Complex, as the Warriors split a doubleheader with No. 7 Messiah, falling 5-0 in game one before a 3-2 win in the second game.

With one out in the bottom of the seventh, sophomore Amy Cline (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg Area) drew a walk and reached second when she went in hard on a grounder and the shortstop lost the handle on a putout, also allowing sophomore Taylor Lesser (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain) to reach. After a wild pitch moved both runner up, Poorman knocked a ball up the middle and Lesser crashed through the catcher with the winning run for the Warriors (10-14 overall, 4-6 Commonwealth).

Down 2-0 after five and a half innings, the Warriors got on the board in the sixth inning, as senior Shauna Starr (Jersey Shore, Pa./Jersey Shore) drew a walk, moved to second on a sac bunt and scored on a  double from freshman Abbi  Miller (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport Area).

The Falcons (25-5 overall, 7-3 Commonwealth) got an unearned run in the fourth inning thanks to an error and a double and added another single tally in the fifth inning when Ashley Lehman doubled before coming around to score.

Other than that, sophomore Holly Lansberry (Curwensville, Pa./Curwensville Area) (7-6) performed well in the circle, tossing seven innings, allowing just one earned run, a walk and seven hits. She struck out three.

Messiah’s Sara Dietrich (8-1) took her first loss of the year, allowing a hit, one earned run and a walk in one inning of relief.

Miller led the Warriors offensively, finishing 2-for-3 with a double and RBI. Sara Seneca went 2-for-4 for the Falcons and both Lauren Seneca and Lehman also finished with two hits and a stolen base.

In the first game, All-American Jess Rhoads struck out nine Warriors in four innings of work, allowing just one hit, to help lift the Falcons to a 5-0 win. Dietrich pitched the final three innings, allowing three hits, a walk and striking out four for her third save.

The Falcons got on the board in the second inning, thanks an RBI single from Dietrich and they added three runs on three hits in the fifth inning before scoring a single tally thanks to a triple from Lehman in the seventh.

Sophomore Allyson Marianelli (Old Forge, Pa./Old Forge) made a couple nice plays in center field, though, to keep the Warriors in the game, going over the fence to rob a home run in the fourth inning before making a shoestring grab later in the inning.

Rhoads (9-1) earned the win in four innings, as she allowed just a hit. Sophomore Brie Braga (New Bedford, Mass./New Bedford) (2-7) took the loss for Lycoming, allowing five runs and eight hits in a complete game.

Abi Buchler and Krista Ammon led the Falcons offensively, as each posted two hits, two RBI and a run.

The Warriors will get back on the field on Good Friday, April 22, facing Alvernia in a Commonwealth Conference clash at the Shangraw Athletic Complex at 11 a.m.
