LOYALSOCK TOWNSHIP, Pa. – With wins in all three of its doubles matches, the Lycoming College women’s tennis team used its momentum to stop a nine-match Commonwealth Conference skid, as it posted an 8-1 win over Arcadia University in the conference opener for both teams at Bruce Henry Park on Saturday afternoon, March 26.

After falling to Arcadia (0-2 overall, 0-1 Commonwealth) in each of the last two years by scores of 7-2 and 6-3, the Warriors (3-3 overall, 1-0 Commonwealth), with a revamped lineup, posted their first conference win since an 8-1 win over Albright on Sept. 20, 2008.

Lycoming got rolling in doubles play, as the team of freshman Kathy Jacobs (Milton, Pa./Milton) and sophomore Adriana Rivera (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) posted an 8-1 win over Danielle Riggins and Melissa D’Arcangelo at No. 3, sophomore Megan Gardner (Hughesville, Pa./Hughesville) and senior Rebecca Reynolds (South Williamsport, Pa./South Williamsport) posted an 8-3 win over Megan Gillespie and Beth Osipowitz at No. 1 and the freshmen pair of Sayumi Akashi (Kanagawa, Japan/University of the Sacred Heart) and Linda Fogg (Topsham, Maine/Mt. Ararat) notched an 8-4 win over Jasmine Peake and Irina Samson at No. 2 to clinch the doubles sweep.

In singles play, Reynolds posted a 6-1, 6-1 win over Peake at No. 3 and Akashi added a 6-2, 6-2 win over Osipowitz at No. 2 to clinch the win. Gardner picked up a 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 win over Gillespie at No. 1 and Rivera notched a 6-0, 6-1 win over Etka Butala at No. 6. After a loss at No. 4, freshman Ellen Phillips (Muncy, Pa./Muncy) notched a 6-4, 6-3 win over D’Arcangelo at No. 5 to wrap up the win.

The Warriors get back into action on Saturday when they head to Lebanon Valley for a 12 p.m. Commonwealth Conference match.
