NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. –
With 15 hits in a span of 17 batters, the Lycoming College softball team exploded for a 13-run fifth-inning to clinch a 14-1 win over Suffolk University in their opening game on Thursday, March 17 at the Central Park Sports Complex. The Warriors wrapped up their run at the National Collegiate Sports Invitational with an 8-4 win over Principia, concluding their eight-game Spring Break run with a 6-2 record.

Against Suffolk, sophomore Brie Braga (New Bedford, Mass./New Bedford) tossed a two-hitter, allowing just a fourth-inning run that tied the game at one. However, the Warriors responded briskly, as the first six hitters in the fifth inning posted singles before a sac fly. After that, the Warriors stroked nine straight hits, with sophomores Amy Cline (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg) and Bethany Garnand (Hagerstown, Md./Smithsburg) posting doubles.

Braga (1-2) shut down the Rams (1-7 overall) in the fifth inning to clinch the team’s third run-rule win of the trip.

Against Principia, senior Shauna Starr (Jersey Shore, Pa./Jersey Shore) led the way with two hits, a run and two RBI, while the team posted 11 hits to score its eight runs, the fifth time in eight games the team finished with double-figure hits.

With a 1-0 lead, the Warriors broke open the game in the fourth inning, as sophomore Holly Lansberry (Curwensville, Pa./Curwensville Area) singled to lead off before Cline reached on an error. After a sac bunt moved the runners to second and third, Starr drove in Lansberry with a single. Freshman Abbi Miller (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport Area) followed with an RBI single and sophomore Allyson Marianelli (Old Forge,  Pa./Old Forge) drove in Starr with a sac fly before freshman Katie Gross (Warminster, Pa./William Tennent) drove in Miller with a double.

The Panthers (1-5 overall) closed within two runs with three runs in the bottom of the fourth and both teams traded a run in the sixth before the Warriors put the game out of reach with two runs in the seventh. Cline led off with a single, stole second and scored on an RBI single from sophomore Janelle Poorman (Bellefonte, Pa./Bald  Eagle Area). Poorman came around to score when Miller reached on an error.

Lansberry (4-0) won her fourth straight game, as she pitched all seven innings, allowing six hits and four walks while striking out six.

The Warriors return to Pennsylvania where they will stay on the road for eight games, starting by heading to former Freedom Conference foe Wilkes University on Wednesday, March 23, for a 3 p.m. game.
