Lesser posts five hits as Warriors split season opening games in Myrtle Beach

With 13 runs in the last four innings, the Lycoming College softball team overpowered Division II Barton College, 13-8, for a season-opening win in the National Collegiate Sports Invitational at the Central Park Sports Complex on Monday afternoon, March 14. In the second game, Lycoming posted 11 hits and scored six runs, but fell to Commonwealth Conference foe Arcadia, 11-6, in a non-conference game.

Sophomore Taylor Lesser (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain) led the Warriors (1-1 overall) in the pair of games, going 5-for-10 with seven RBI, a double and a run.

Against Barton, the Warriors fell behind, 6-0, before storming back, capped by a six-run sixth-inning to down the Division II program.

After closing within five runs with a single run in the fourth inning, the Warriors closed within two runs in the fifth inning, as Lesser blasted a bases-loaded double.

After the Bulldogs (7-11 overall) got a run back in the bottom of the inning, the Warriors broke open the game with a six-run sixth inning. A pair of errors helped senior Shauna Starr (Jersey Shore, Pa./Jersey Shore) and sophomore Allyson Marianelli (Old Forge, Pa./Old Forge) reach, freshman Abbi Miller (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport Area) loaded the bases with a single. Sophomore Bethany Garnand (Hagerstown, Md./Smithsburg) and sophomore Holly Lansberry (Curwensville, Pa./Curwensville Area) followed with RBI singles before sophomore Amy Cline (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg Area) blasted a double. Lesser capped the rally with a two-RBI single.

In the seventh inning, the Warriors kept the pressure on, as Marianelli singled, Miller walked and Garnand singled to load the bases before a pair of Bulldog errors helped plate two runs. Sophomore Janelle Poorman (Bellefonte, Pa./Bald Eagle Area) drove in the last Warrior run of the game with a bases-loaded walk.

After allowing six runs in the first inning, Lansberry (1-0) settled down to allow just two over the next frames. She finished with 10 strikeouts while allowing six walks and 10 hits.

Cline finished 2-for-4 with three runs and two RBI to go with a double and a fourth-inning homer, Lesser added two hits, a double and six RBI and Garnand posted three hits and three runs to lead the Warriors.

In the second game, Arcadia used 10 hits and four Warrior errors to notch an 11-6 win in a non-conference game between the Commonwealth Conference foes.

After the Knights took a 3-1 lead in the first inning, the Warriors tied the game with a pair of runs. Sophomore Brie Braga (New Bedford, Mass./New Bedford) led off with a walk before Miller singled, setting up RBI singles from freshman Samantha Gonzalez (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) and Marianelli.

The Knights, however, scored seven runs from the fourth to sixth innings to take control of the game before the Warriors rallied with a pair of runs in the seventh inning. Starr started the rally with a double before Miller reached on a fielder’s choice. Freshman Katie Gross (Warminster, Pa./William Tennent) followed with an RBI single and an error helped plate Miller.

Marianelli led the Warriors, going 2-for-4 with two RBI while Lesser added three hits, an RBI and a run. Starr went 2-for-4 with a run and a double and Gonzalez went 2-for-3 with two RBI.

Braga (0-1) took the loss for the Warriors, as she tossed a complete game.

The Warriors get back in action at the Central Park Sports Complex on Tuesday, March 15, as they face Principia at 11:30 a.m. before facing Suffolk at 1:30 p.m.
