WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Senior Troy Hayre (McLean, Va./McLean) became the second Lycoming College wrestler to reach 20 wins this season, but the Warriors fell in seven weight classes against No. 27 SUNY Cortland, 22-10, on Saturday afternoon, Feb. 5, at the Recreation Center in Empire Collegiate Wrestling Conference action.
The Red Dragons (13-4-1 overall, 3-1 ECWC) posted decisions in the first two matches before senior Mike Maurer (Towanda, Pa./Towanda Area) posted a 5-3 win over Adam Chemaskey at 141 pounds, posting a first period takedown and a second period reversal to take a 4-0 lead before holding on for the win.
Senior Isaiah Britton (Williamsport, Pa./Loyalsock Township) added his 21st win of the season with a 7-2 win over Andre Berry at 149 pounds, as he built up a 6-0 lead in the first two periods and allowed just two Berry escapes to tie the match at six.
However, the Warriors (10-11 overall, 3-4 ECWC) fell in the next three matches to fall behind 16-10 before Hayre delivered his 20th win, posting a 9-0 major decision against Alexander Meyers. A takedown and a tech fall in the first period gave Hayre a big lead to work with during his first match since Jan. 15.
With the score 16-10, the Red Dragons won the final two bouts by decision to wrap up the win.
The Warriors get back on the mat on Wednesday, Feb. 9, when they head to Stevens Tech for a 6 p.m. dual meet.
