Warriors win first of season with 8-1 decision against Eagles

Box Score WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. - With three doubles wins, the Lycoming College women’s tennis team was able to take its momentum into singles play and win its first match of the season, 8-1, over Juniata College on Tuesday afternoon, Sept. 21.

In doubles play, the No. 3 team of Adriana Rivera (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) and freshman Kathy Jacobs (Milton, Pa./Milton) paced the Warriors (1-2 overall) with an 8-2 win over Rachel Adams and Laura Gregory. Minutes later, the duo of sophomore Megan Gardner (Hughesville, Pa./Hughesville) and freshman Sayumi Akashi (Kanagawa, Japan/University of the Sacred Heart) checked in with an 8-3 win over Katie Healy and Megan Phillips at No. 1. Freshman Linda Fogg (Topsham, Maine/Mt. Ararat) and senior Rebecca Reynolds (South Williamsport, Pa./South Williamsport) closed out the set with a hard-earned 8-6 win at No. 2 against Stacie Beegle and Lauren Perow.

The momentum carried over, as freshman Ellen Phillips (Muncy, Pa./Muncy) posted a 6-1, 6-0 win over Gregory at No. 6. After a loss at No. 3, the Warriors clinched the match as Akashi notched a 6-3, 6-2 win over Megan Phillips at No. 2. Jacobs notched a 7-5, 6-0 win at No. 5 and Reynolds notched a 1-6, 6-4, 7-6 (4) win at No. 4 against Perow before Gardner closed out the match with her first career singles win, 7-6 (6), 6-7 (4), 10-7 against Healy, a first team All-Landmark Conference selection in 2009-10.

The Eagles evened their record at 1-1.

The Warriors stay home on Saturday, Sept. 25, for a match with King’s (Pa.) at 11 a.m. at Bruce Henry Park.
