MONTCLAIR, N.J. – Junior #Emily Abel# (Spring Grove, Pa./Spring Grove) used 79 digs in two matches to obliterate the school’s career digs record, but the Lycoming College volleyball team fell twice on Saturday at the Montclair State Classic, falling 3-1 (23-25, 25-12, 25-15, 25-10) to St. Mary’s (Md.) and 3-0 (20-25, 19-25, 23-25) to Penn State Altoona on Saturday afternoon to wrap up its play at the tournament. Lycoming is now 4-4 overall.
Abel, who broke the record during a 40-dig match against St. Mary’s (4-2 overall), added 79 digs on Saturday to clinch a spot on the all-tournament team. Abel, who now has 1,602 career digs, passed Jackie Moore (1997-2000), who set the mark with 1,551 digs.
Freshmen Shelby Gear (Rochester, N.Y./Gates-Chili) and #Tanya DeWalt# (Mainesburg, Pa./Mansfield) added six kills against St. Mary’s and Gear also added 10 digs in the match. Senior #Megan Schulze# (Reedsville, Pa./Indian Valley) added five kills, five digs and three blocks and freshman Katelyn McKillop (Mount Pocono, Pa./Pocono Mountain West) added 16 assists and seven digs.
Against Penn State Altoona (6-5 overall), Gear led the Warriors with nine kills, six digs, two aces and two blocks and Abel added 39 digs. DeWalt posted five kills and three blocks and freshman Lacey Sollenberger (New Enterprize, Pa./North Bedford) added four kills and three blocks. McKillop posted her third double-double with 13 assists and 15 digs, also adding two aces.
The Warriors get back on the court on Monday when they head to Lancaster Bible for a non-conference match at 7 p.m.
