Box Score 2 MONTCLAIR, N.J. – Freshman
Tanya DeWalt (Mainesburg, Pa./Mansfield) led the Lycoming College volleyball team on Friday, Sept. 10, in the opening games of the Montclair State, hitting better than .400 in each match and posting 18 kills as the Warriors downed host Montclair State, 3-0 (25-18, 25-21, 25-15), before falling in the nightcap to SUNY Cortland, 3-1 (25-27, 25-16, 25-18, 26-24).
The Warriors (4-2 overall) had a solid first match, hitting .235 while forcing Montclair State (0-6 overall) to hit -.023 during a 3-0 (25-18, 25-21, 25-15) win to open the tournament.
DeWalt led the team with eight kills and a .467 hitting percentage. Junior
Emily Abel (Spring Grove, Pa./Spring Grove) moved within 47 digs of the school's career record, posting nine in the match and she added four kills. Freshman
Katelyn McKillop (Mount Pocono, Pa./Pocono Mountain West) added 15 assists and four digs.
Senior
Megan Schulze (Reedsville, Pa./Indian Valley) added three kills, seven digs and two blocks and both senior
McKenna Warren (Elmira, N.Y./C.M.S. Elmira) and freshman
Shelby Gear (Rochester, N.Y./Gates-Chili) added four kills. Junior
Amy Sharlow (Fair Lawn, N.J./Fair Lawn) added eight assists, three digs and two aces.
In the first set, the two teams fought closely for much of the set, with Lycoming finally taking control with a 7-1 run to close out the 25-18 win. In the second set, Lycoming took control after the Red Hawks tied the match at 11, rolling out on a 5-1 run to take a 16-12 lead. The Warriors extended the lead to five points before the Red Hawks made a late run to comewithin one at 22-21. However, Warren posted a kill and Abel closed the set with an ace.
In the third set, the Warriors jumped out to a 15-4 run thanks to an eight-point run off the serve of Sharlow, as they rolled to the 25-15 win to close the match.
DeWalt led the Warriors with 10 kills, five blocks and a .444 hitting percentage in the second match against SUNY Cortland, but the Red Dragons overcame an early Warrior lead to take a 3-1 (25-27, 25-16, 25-18, 26-24) decision.
Abel made 19 digs to move within 28 digs of the school's all-time record of 1,551 career digs set by Jackie Moore (1997-2000). Freshman
Chelsee Strine (South Boardman, Mich./Forest Area) added 10 digs and two kills.
In the first set, the Warriors made a furious comeback after falling behind 22-19, going on an 8-3 run to clinch the win with a block by Schulze and Gear. The run featured two kills from freshman
Lacey Sollenberger (New Enterprize, Pa./North Bedford).
The Red Dragons fought back, though, winning the next two sets, 25-16 and 25-18, before clinching the match with a 26-24 win in the fourth set. The Warriors fell behind, 22-18, but fought back to take a 24-22 lead by rolling off six straight points on the serve of Abel, with Warren keying the run with two kills. However, the Red Dragons reeled off the last four points to clinch the match.
Sollenberger posted six kills, hitting .600 and Schulze posted five kills and six digs, while Geat posted four kills and six blocks. Sophomore
Jackie Oliva (Barnesville, Pa./Mahoney) added five kills. McKillop posted 19 assists and seven digs.
Cortland (7-1 overall) was led by 14 kills from Katie Wick and 13 kills and 14 digs from Ashley Coyle. Kristen Guerico posted 46 assists and seven digs.
The Warriors wrap up their time at the Montclair State Classic on Saturday, facing St. Mary's (Md.) at 1 p.m. before facing Penn State Altoona at 3 p.m.
