LANCASTER, Pa. – Don’t call it a comeback, they were there the whole time. After going down 4-1, the Lycoming College men’s tennis team rallied to win the 2010 Commonwealth Conference title 5-4 over Elizabethtown College on Saturday, May 8. Junior Alex Beattie was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player as head coach John Dorner won his first title.
Lycoming’s day did not start off well, down 2-1 at the end of doubles play.
Beattie and partner
Jason Mifsud won the first flight 8-5. The Warrior’s strong play in the middle flights was the key to victory, but it took several matches to go into a tiebreak to determine a winner.
Beattie won his second-flight singles match, dropping the first set 4-6, but rallying to win the second and third sets 6-1, 6-3. Mifsud also needed a tie break in the third flight. He won the first set 6-3, but dropped the second 0-6 and came back for the victory 6-3.
Freshman sensation
David Brown, who is now 12-1 in singles, won a true tiebreaking battle, falling in the opening set of his fourth-flight match 3-6, and needed an extra point to win the second, 7-5. Brown took the third and final set 6-3.
Cody Heffner sealed the victory for Lycoming with a solid 6-4, 6-3 victory in the sixth flight.
Lycoming awaits the selection on Monday, May 10 at 9 p.m. to find out who they will play in the NCAA Tournament.
