WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – The Lycoming College softball team split its final regular season home doubleheader with the Lady Lions of Albright College on Saturday, April 24. Lycoming rallied in the seventh inning to force extra play in the first game, winning 2-1, but falling in the second contest 6-4. Prior to the games, the Lady Warriors honored their two seniors, Jess Nabholz and Courtney Black.

After Albright (7-24, 2-10) scored a run in the opening inning of the first game, the Lady Warriors held the Lions scoreless for the rest of the tilt, but were also unable to plate any runs until the seventh inning when freshman Ashley Demchak crossed home plate after being driven in by fellow freshman Amy Cline.

Lycoming (13-23, 3-9) could not drive in any more runs, despite four hits in the eighth inning, but finally cracked through Albright defense in the bottom of the ninth. Freshman catcher Laura Taylor led off in the ninth, reaching on a single when she put the ball into left field. She got around to third base after sophomore Manda Peck hit a two-bagger. Cline stepped up to the plate and hit a walk-off single into right center to earn the game-winning RBI.

In the pitching circle, freshman Holly Lansberry earned the win, throwing a complete game and sitting down five batters. She had solid defense behind her, forcing Albright into 10 fly outs and 10 ground outs. At first base, Black tallied 11 putouts.

“For a young team to battle back and win it in nine innings shows the level of growth they’ve shown in making the transition from not only high school, but from the beginning of the season as well,” said head coach Dan Lazorka.

Game two started out similarly to the first contest, with Albright scoring three runs in the opening inning. But unlike the first game, the Lady Warriors scored runs early in the tilt, with Cline and freshman second baseman Taylor Lesser both reaching home in the first inning. The Lions scored just one run in the second inning while Lycoming leftfielder Allyson Marianelli keeping Lycoming in the game with another run in the bottom of the second.

The Lady Warriors were held scoreless until the fourth when pitcher Brieanne Braga gave herself some run support as Nabholz drove her in. Albright scored a security run in the fifth inning to hold onto the victory.

Braga was the second game’s pitcher of record, forcing Albright into nine ground outs and nine fly outs. Nabholz tallied two RBIs in the second game, while also recording two putouts. Black tallied seven putouts, receiving three assists from Lesser.

Lycoming concludes its season on Saturday, May 1 at Alvernia University in Reading, Pa. The first pitch is slated for noon.
