Warriors’ men’s 200-yard freestyle relay ensures a sweep of the Falcons

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – A dramatic win in the 200-yard freestyle relay by the team of freshman C.J. Arhontakis (West Grove, Pa./Avon Grove), freshman Christian Baxter (Springfield, Pa./Monsignor Bonner), junior Derek Lupia (Reading, Pa./Muhlenberg) and freshman Zack Brower (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroundsburg North) helped the Lycoming College men’s swimming team clinch a 108.5-96.5 win over Messiah College in Middle Atlantic Conference action at the Lamade Gym Pool on Saturday afternoon. Lycoming’s women’s swimming team also posted its first MAC win of the year with a 119-81 win over the Falcons.

On the men’s side, the Warriors (2-3 overall, 2-2 MAC) got off to a great start in the 400-yard relay thanks to Arhontakis, who helped the Warriors take a 1.5 second lead through the first 50-yards. Baxter kept a full-second lead in the race before Lupia added a tenth of a second to the lead heading into the final 50 yards, where Messiah’s Zachary McArdle posted a race-high 22.24 split. However, Brower notched a 23.17 split to help the Warriors post a season-best 1:33.86 to clinch the win.

Brower, Lupia and junior Joe Andrie (Reedsville, Pa./Indian Valley) led the Warriors with a first-place and second-place finish each. Brower notched a win in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:58.64 and took second in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 53.21. Lupia notched a season-best time of 53.00 to win the 100-yard freestyle and took second in the 200 with a time of 1:59.32. Andrie posted a huge win in the 100-yard breaststroke by touching out Messiah’s Daniel Wengert by less than a quarter of a second, finishing in 1:03.57 and he came in second in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:12.57.

Junior Myles Biggs (Easton, Pa./Easton Area) helped the Warriors build a lead in the 1,000-yard freestyle, as he posted a time of 11:18.78 to win the race, leading a 1-2-3 finish for the Warriors. Freshman Jack Port (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cedar Cliff) took second with a personal-best time of 11:33.06 and senior Joe Kuder (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) took third with a season-best time of 11:33.38.

Messiah fell to 2-5 overall and 1-2 in the MAC.

On the women’s side, the Warriors won 10 of the 11 races en route to the 119-81 win, led by three first-place finishes from freshman Jennie Marosits (Mt. Lakes, N.J./Mt. Lakes), who notched wins in the 1,000-yard freestyle, the 500-yard freestyle and the 100-yard backstroke, and senior Stacy Flick (Easton, Pa./Easton Area), who notched wins in the 50-yard freestyle, 100-yard freestyle and the 100-yard breaststroke.

Marosits had a breakthrough day for the Warriors (2-3-1 overall, 1-2-1 MAC), notching a season-best time of 11:54.69 in the 1,000-yard freestyle, a time of 5:54.88 in the 500-yards and a season-best time of 1:05.16 in the 100-yard backstroke.

Flick posted times of 25.82 in the 50-yard freestyle, 56.75 in the 100-yard freestyle and 1:08.82 in the 100-yard breaststroke.

Senior Meg Emery (Burke, Va./Lake Braddock) also posted a win in the 200-yard freestyle, posting a time of 2:10.64 and sophomore Hope Weber (Millersville, Pa./Penn Manor) notched a time of 2:27.33 in the 200-yard individual medley. Sophomore Lindsey Hunsicker (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) added a time of 1:06.36 to win the 100-yard butterfly and the 200-yard medley relay team of Emery, freshman Ariel Smith (Hanover Township, Pa./Holy Redeemer), Hunsicker and sophomore Caitlin DeAngelo (Reading, Pa./Muhlenberg) added a winning time of 2:00.14.

The Warriors get back in the pool after the semester break, heading to Lebanon Valley for the MAC meet on Saturday, Jan. 15 at 1 p.m.
