Warriors fall twice at Marymount tri-match

ARLINGTON, Va. – Junior Emily Abel (Spring Grove, Pa./Spring Grove) posted 32 digs to move within 51 of becoming the first player in school history to reach 2,000 in a career, but the Lycoming College volleyball team fell twice in a tri-match at Marymount University on Saturday, Oct. 23, falling, 3-1 to Marymount in the first match before falling to Moravian, 3-0, in the nightcap.

In the first match, the Warriors (12-14 overall) played tight with the Saints (10-18 overall) in all four sets of the first match, but Marymount was able eek out a 28-26, 25-22, 23-25, 25-20 win.

The Warriors got three double-digit kill performances, as freshman Tanya DeWalt (Mainesburg, Pa./Mansfield) and senior Megan Schulze (Reedsville, Pa./Indian Valley) each posted 12 kills and senior Kelly Rose (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Bishop Hoban) added 10.

Freshman Katelyn McKillop (Mount Pocono, Pa./Pocono Mountain West) added 40 assists, six digs and three aces, freshman Lacey Sollenberger (New Enterprize, Pa./North Bedford) added eight kills and three blocks. Freshman Shelby Gear (Rochester, N.Y./Gates-Chili) added three kills and three blocks and junior Emily Abel (Spring Grove, Pa./Spring Grove) posted 20 digs and two kills. Freshman Shaina Preiss (East Hampton, N.Y./East Hampton) added six digs and both senior McKenna Warren (Elmira, N.Y./CMS Elmira) and freshman Kassidy Sedore (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Spackenkill) each posted five.

Sharda Braxton led the Saints (10-18) with 19 kills and Michelle McCormick added 12 kills and nine digs. Johanna Hummel added 11 kills, six digs and four blocks. Melissa Warren posted 42 assists and four aces and Chelsea Gates posted 14 digs and two aces.

The Warriors fought back from a 17-12 deficit in the first set to take a 21-18 lead after a kill by DeWalt. The Saints fought back from three straight match points though, to take the set, 28-26. In the second set, the Warriors took a 17-14 lead, but the Saints again fought back with an 11-6 run to take the set.

Down 19-13 in the third set, the Warriors rolled on a 12-4 run to take the set, with Schulze posting four kills and both Rose and DeWalt posting two during the run. However, the Saints closed out the fifth set with a 10-2 run to win the set, 25-20.

Abel led the Warriors with 12 kills against Moravian (17-10 overall), as the Greyhounds posted a 3-0 (25-14,25-18, 25-21) decision.

McKillop added 23 assists and two aces and Gear posted five kills, eight digs and four blocks. Sollenberger also added five kills and DeWalt posted a match-high five blocks. Freshman Kendra Bitner (Newville, Pa./Big Springs) added four kills and three blocks.

Christine Reeser posted eight kills to lead the Greyhounds, who also got seven kills, eight digs and three aces from Jean Anne Carey. Kate Moquete added seven kills and Christine Poole posted 27 assists. Brittany O’Hara posted four blocks.

The Warriors get back on the court on Monday when they head to Misericordia for a non-conference match at 7 p.m.
