WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. --- The state of Pennsylvania continued to show its wrestling dominance as Lycoming College and King’s College each picked up two wins over SUNY-Oswego and the Rochester Institute of Technology on Saturday, Jan. 9. The Warriors, who are ranked No. 24 in the most recent Brute-Adidas Coaches Poll, defeated Oswego 28-9 and R.I.T. 55-0, improving Lycoming to 3-1 in the Empire Collegiate Wrestling Conference.
Lycoming (8-3) dominated the mat during the Duals, posting three major decisions and eight pins. No Warrior grappler was pinned during the day, while only allowing one major decision.
Several Warriors went 2-0 on the day, including141-pounder Mike Maurer, who posted a 13-2 decision against Oswego and 3-0 win over R.I.T. (0-6). At 149-pounds, Isaiah Britton (Williamsport, Pa./Loyalsock Twp.) improved to 9-1 on the season against Division III opponents, registered an 11-5 decision in his first match and pinning his opponent from R.I.T. in 1:34, his first win by fall of the season.
Senior 165- pounder Chris Dahlheimer (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion), who is currently ranked No. 6 in the nation, also went 2-0 at the Duals. He picked up his first win of the day with a 9-2 decision against Oswego (1-3), followed by the fastest pin of the day against R.I.T., registering the win in just 14 seconds.
At 197-pounds, Russel Korbul (Asbury, N.J./North Hunterdon) picked up a set of wins, scoring a 6-2 win in the Oswego match, followed by a win by fall in 4:44 against the Tigers. 174-pounder Kyle Crouthamel (Bethlehem, Pa./Bethlehem Freedom) earned two victories, tallying a 7-1 decision against the Lakers and a 15-6 major decision against R.I.T.
In the R.I.T. match, Walker Faison (Virginia Beach, Va./Cox) recorded a pin in the first 1:20 of his 125-pound match. At 157-pounds, Zach Frederick (West Chester, Pa./St. Mark’s) chipped in a second-period win, earning a fall in 3:30. Senior Troy Hayre (Falls Church, Va./McLean) pinned his R.I.T. opponent in the first period, stopping the bout in 2:53.
Both Pennsylvania teams showed dominance, particularly against R.I.T. Neither Lycoming nor King’s
allowed a single team point against the Tigers, while combining to win the Duals 158-24. The Warriors and Monarchs tallied a total of 13 pins. In the last four meeting of the states, Pennsylvania is 15-1.
The Warriors, as well as the other three schools, are all back in Williamsport on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 15-16 as Lycoming hosts the 2010 Budd Whitehill National Duals. Wrestling is slated to begin at 9 a.m. on both days. The event will be held in the College’s Lamade Gymnasium.
