Warrior swimming downs Dutchmen

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. --- The Lycoming College women’s swim team defeated the Dutchmen of Lebanon Valley 159-92 while the men’s team defeated the visitors 162.5-75.5 in their final home meets of the season on Saturday, Jan. 16. During a break in the action, the teams honored their four graduating seniors, Caroline LeHota, Tess Duffin, John Dougherty and Nicolas John.

In the women’s events the Lycoming group of LeHota, Stacy Flick, Lindsey Hunsicker and Randi Bosch took first in the 200-yard medley relay, stopping the clock in 1:56.96. Coming in second was also a Lycoming team, consisting of Hope Weber, Emilie Norton, Ashley Tudgay and Kara McGonnell, finishing in 2:05.83.

In the 1,000-yard freestyle, Lindsay Stern (Lawrenceville, N.J./Lawrenceville) touched the wall in 12:31.87, good enough for second place, followed by Caitlin DeAngelo (Reading, Pa./Muhlenberg) in third place with a time of 12:44.26.

The first event the Lady Warriors swept was the 200-yard freestyle. Elisa Becker (Reston, Va./South Lakes) finished first in 2:07.72, followed by Meg Emery (Burke, Va./Lake Braddock Secondary) in 2:08.66 and Claire Zido (Pittsburgh, Pa./Woodland Hills) in 2:13.28.

Tudgay (Swoyersville, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) and LeHota took first and second, respectively, in the 100-yard backstroke, with Tudgay finishing in 1:05.80 and LeHota in a time of 1:07.96. In the 100-yard breaststroke, Flick (Easton, Pa./Easton Area) finished in first and Norton took third, Flick getting to the wall in 1:09.45 and Norton (Winthrop, N.Y./St. Laurence Central) in 1:19.59.

Lycoming (4-3, 4-1 Middle Atlantic) swept the next two women’s events, starting with the 200-yard butterfly. Weber (Millersville, Pa./Penn Manor) took the top-spot in 2:21.53 and Hunsicker (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) grabbed second in 2:25.20. Becker wrapped up the trio in 2:28.16. In the 50-yard freestyle, Bosch snuck in a first-place finish with a time of 26.86, edging out teammate LeHota (Bellefonte, Pa./Bald Eagle Area) in 27.54. Danielle Mulvey (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) took third with a time of 28.36.

The Lady Warriors swept a fourth event, this time in the 200-yard backstroke. Weber nabbed first-place with a time of 2:23.11, followed by DeAngelo in 2:32.09 and Stern in 2:35.90. In the 100-yard freestyle, Tudgay took first, stopping the clock in 58.40, followed by Bosch (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) in third with a time of 59.44.

Two Warrior pairs combined to go one-two in two separate races. Flick and Zido paired up in the 200-yard breaststroke, with Flick taking first in 2:36.35 and Zido in 2:47.86, followed by Emery and Becker in the 500-yard freestyle. Emery got to the wall first in 5:44.10 and Becker in second in 5:48.02.

On the men’s squad, Lycoming's (2-5, 2-3 MAC) group of Ben Hitchcock, Joe Andrie, Chad Lemmons and John Kitner took first in the 200-yard medley relay, finishing in a time of 1:45.79.

Myles Biggs (Easton, Pa./Easton Area) and Joe Kuder took first and second in the 1,000-yard freestyle, Biggs finishing in 10:53.78 and Kuder (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) in 11:40.96.

In the 200-yard freestyle, Dougherty (Mountain Top, Pa./Bishop Hoban) and freshman Jehiel Boner took first and third, respectively. Dougherty stopped the clock in 1:56.85 and Boner (Springville, Pa./Elk Lake) finished in 2:03.92.

Like its female counterpart, the men’s team was able to sweep some events, starting with the 100-yard backstroke. Hitchcock (Newark, Del./Newark) set the pace in 1:00.42, followed by Trevor Silbernagel (Jefferson Township, Pa./Jefferson Twp.) with a time of 1:05.11 and Kuder in 1:06.82.

John Kitner (Great Mills, Md./Great Mills) and Joe Andrie dropped a one-two punch in the 100-yard breaststroke. Kitner concluded in 1:05.65 followed by Andrie (Reedsville, Pa./Indian Valley) in 1:05.80. Chad Lemmons (Boiling Springs, Pa./Boiling Springs) and Boner took first and second in the 200-yard butterfly, Lemmons in 2:33.74 and Boner in 2:39.28.

In the 100-yard freestyle, Dougherty grabbed second in 53.10 and Derek Lupia (Reading, Pa./Muhlenberg) took a third-place finish with a time of 53.95.

The men’s team took another one-two-three sweep in the 200-yard backstroke, paced by Hitchcock in 2:07.01, Silbernagel in 2:24.35 and Kuder in a time of 2:24.46.

Lycoming transitions into Road Warriors, as they are away from their home pool for the rest of the season. Lycoming returns to the water on Wednesday, Jan. 20 when it meets FDU-Florham and King’s College at the Wilkes-Barre Catholic Youth Center. The Middle Atlantic Conference doubleheader is set for 6 p.m.
