Lycoming sweeps Keystone, Starr tosses a no-no

Lauren CareyWILLIAMSPORT, Pa. --- Shauna Starr tossed a no-hitter in game two of a Lycoming College sweep over Keystone College on Wednesday, April 8. Starr allowed just one batter on base on balls as the Lady Warriors took down game one 8-6 and the second match 11-0.

The pair of wins improves Lycoming to 9-16 overall and drops the Giants of Keystone to 5-12.

Game one was a tight affair, but Lycoming pulled out the 8-6 victory. Just the second batter in the bottom of the first, Lauren Carey hit her first collegiate homerun, narrowing the early Giant lead 2-1. Keystone kept Lycoming quiet while scoring four runs in the second, until the bottom of the third when the Warriors plated four runs. Manda Peck drilled a lead-off single, while Carey also reached on another single. Starr stepped up to the plate and tattooed a three run shot over the outfield fence. Courtney Black reached on a single and scored as Kelly Prendergast reached third on a double and advanced on the throw, putting Lycoming up 5-4.

The Giants tied things up in the top of the fourth 5-5, putting home one run. The Lycoming bats again came alive in the bottom of the frame, with Peck and Starr scoring their second runs of the game, and Carey getting her third, finishing the scoring for Lycoming. The Giants were able to score just one more run, on a homerun by Kelly Iovieno. Jessica Nabholz took the win, putting away three batters and forcing six fly-outs and 11 groundouts.

Madalyn Smith and Kelly PrendergastIn the second game, Lycoming put things out of reach early, batting all nine Warriors through the first inning at least once each, giving huge run support to Starr for her no-hitter performance. The Warriors scored 11 runs on just five hits, putting 12 players on the bags with 12 walks, including three walks for Jessica Williams, who also tallied three RBIs. Carey, Starr, and Nabholz all scored once, while Rebecca Spencer and Courtney Black both scored three runs. Prendergast reached home twice in the night cap.

The Lady Warriors will be idle until Wednesday, April 15 when they host their second straight game against head coach Dan Lazorka’s former team, Misericordia University. The first pitch is set for 3 p.m.
