SELINSGROVE, Pa. --- After being delayed for two days, the Lycoming College softball team fell to Susuqehanna University in a double header sweep 4-0, 8-4 on Thursday, April 23. Jessica Nabholz led the team from the mound, forcing seven fly outs and 10 ground outs in game one.
The pair of losses drops Lycoming to 10-22 overall, while Susquehanna improves to 18-13 on the year.
Both teams wore pink shirts to recognize breast cancer as part of Susuqehanna’s “Live Pink” day.
Game one started off slowly, with Susquehanna not scoring until the second inning. Rebecca Spencer and Courtney Black were the only Warrior hits in the game, with Nabholz and Kelly Prendergast reaching on walks. Madalyn Smith got to first base after being plunked by the pitcher. But Lycoming was unable to convert the runs.
Susquehanna came out hot in game two, scoring three runs in the first inning. But the Lady Warriors battled back, closing the gap with three of their own runs in the top of the third inning. Manda Peck, Lauren Carey and Shauna Starr were all able to round the bases and score. The Crusaders got their bats going again in the bottom of the third, driving in another three runs. Nabholz reached home in the fifth inning to narrow the margin 6-4 before another two Susquehanna runs in the bottom of the sixth sealed the Warriors fate. Other Lycoming batters to get hits were Jessica Williams and Marissa Hastings.
Lycoming will finish its season at the Robert L. Shangraw Athletic Complex on Saturday, April 25 in a double header against Albright College. The first game is slated for 1 p.m. The Lady Warriors will honor their three seniors in the intermission between games.
