WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. --- The Lycoming College softball team carried heavy bats against Penn College on Sunday, March 29 as the Lady Warriors picked up the sweep, 6-1 and 14-4. Rebecca Spencer had a standout day, going 3-for-5 at the plate, including a two run homer for the go ahead in game two.
The wins boost Lycoming to 8-12 overall, and Penn College is now 2-4 on the season.
The Wildcats scored early in game one, plating the runner in the second inning, but that would be their only run of the game. The Lycoming bats came alive in the fourth inning. Manda Peck, Lauren Carey and Shauna Starr all reached on singles before Jess Nabholz hit a sack fly to left field to bring in Peck. Carey scored on the throw while Spencer drove in Starr.
In the bottom of the fifth, Lycoming scored another three runs to seal the win. Peck and Carey both scored again, with Chelsea Stein pinch hitting and reaching home. Chelsie Apker got the victory in four innings pitched, facing 16 batters and forcing seven groundouts and four fly outs. Nabholz was credited with the save, pitching three frames with three strikeouts.
Game two saw every player on the roster bat in the third inning, with some Lady Warriors scoring twice. Peck was the lone scorer in the first inning for Lycoming and three runs from Penn College in the top of third put the Warriors down 3-1.
All that changed when Starr and Nabholz each hit singles and Spencer stepped up to the plate and blasted a dead center homerun to put Lycoming up 4-3, sparking the rest of the Warrior hitters.
Other Lycoming players to score were Peck, Carey, Kelly Prendergast, Courtney Black, and Marissa Hastings. Starr, Nabholz, Spencer and Prendergast all reached home twice. Starr earned the victory, pitching five innings and striking out four Wildcats.
Lycoming will be on the road on Tuesday, March 31 as it travels to Juniata College for another non-conference match up, slated to begin at 3 p.m.
