WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. --- For just the third time, the No. 27 Lycoming College wrestling team competed in a dual meet in the Recreation Center on the College’s campus, earning a 21-17 upset over Empire Collegiate Wrestling Conference opponent No. 17 SUNY-Brockport on Saturday, Dec. 12.
The win improves the Warriors to 6-3 overall and 1-1 in the ECWC while the Eagles slip to 0-1 on the season and 0-1 in the league.
After dropping its first two matches to decisions, the Warriors’ evened the score at six apiece after junior Mike Maurer (Towanda, Pa./Towanda) scored a win by fall 3:31 into his 141-pound match.
Continuing Lycoming’s ability to score, junior Isaiah Britton (Williamsport, Pa./Loyalsock) added five points to the Warrior total with a 17-2 technical fall. Britton scored 11 of his points by near fall.
Lycoming dropped four points at 157-pounds, but earned another four points at 165-pounds after senior Chris Dahlheimer (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) earned an 8-0 major decision, scoring two takedowns to open each of the first two periods, followed by two points on a reversal and a caution point, and an additional point after his four minutes of riding time.
The Warrior victory was sealed after 184-pounder Troy Hayre (Falls Church, Va./McLean) earned 10-3 decision and Russel Korbul’s 5-2 decision at 197-pounds. Korbul (Ashbury, N.J./North Hunterdon) got taken down in the opening moments of the first period, but escaped and scored a takedown of his own to go up 3-2 to end the first period. After a scoreless second stanza, Korbul chose bottom to start the third period, earning a second escape and a point for his 1:40 of riding time.
Lycoming is idle until after the winter break. The Warriors open the New Year hosting the Pa./N.Y. Duals, featuring SUNY-Oswego and the Rochester Institute of Technology from New York, as well as King’s College as Pennsylvania’s second representative. Lycoming is slated to open with SUNY-Oswego at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 9.
