HAZLETON, Pa. --- Five different Lycoming College men’s basketball players reached double digits as the Warriors overpowered PSU-Hazleton 88-72 on Wednesday, Nov. 18. Sophomore Mike Bradley (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Joseph’s) picked up his first double-double of the year posting 13 points and 11 rebounds.
Lycoming improves to 2-0 on the season while PSU-Hazleton slides to 0-2.
Both teams traded points for the first three minutes, with the Lions holding a slim 7-6 margin at 17:05. From there, the Warriors took over, never relinquishing the lead.
Lycoming wrapped up the first half with a 22-point lead, its biggest of the half. Freshman Ishaan Davis (Jamaica, N.Y./Chris the King Regional) came up with a three pointer and an offensive and defensive rebound to end the half.
Midway through the second period, the Warriors built up to a 34-point lead after an Austin Smith (Lansdowne, Pa./Penn Wood) scored a lay up on a Taylor Volpe (Hughesville, Pa./Hughesville) assist.
The Warriors utilized a run-and-gun offense, scoring 23 points on fastbreaks to Hazleton’s 10. Paint-play was also a key to victory, with 53 Warrior points coming in the lane.
In the second half, the entire Warrior bench saw time, with Johnathan Williams (Bronx, N.Y./Rice) leading the substitution points with 11. Davis concluded his night with 10 points.
Freshman Jerald Williams (Riverdale, Md./Bladensburg) shot .500 percent from the floor, hitting four of his eight shots for 11 points with six steals, while Eric Anthony (Wheeling, W.Va./Wheeling Central Catholic) also recorded 11 points. Jerald Williams and Anthony combined for seven assists.
Lycoming opens its home season on Saturday, Nov. 21 when it hosts the Lycoming College Tip-off Tournament. The Warriors are slated to play Franciscan Univeristy of Steubenville at 6 p.m. in the opener.
