WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – The Lycoming College wrestling team closed out the 21st Annual Budd Whitehill National Duals with a sixth-place finish on Saturday, Jan. 10. The Warriors finished the tournament with a 3-2 record.
Lycoming opened the day with a 27-13 win against King’s, picking up wins in six individual bouts.
James Couturiaux opened the match with a technical fall over Rick Dorsey to set the tone for the Warriors. Tom Barger added to the lead with a decision over Tony Miele at 141 and Mike Maurer earned a major victory over Frankie Davis at 149. Chris Dahlheimer registered the only pin of the match at 165, defeating Jerry Robbins. Troy Hayre (174) and Bryan Kopesky (197) sealed the win.
In the second match of the day, the Warriors defeated #27 Messiah, 23-11.
Again it was the freshman Couturiaux leading things off with a win at 125. Barger earned a major decision at 141 and Maurer earned a decision at 149. The Warriors dropped the next two matches, but bounced back with wins in all four of the final bouts. Hayre earned a decision at 174, Kyle Crouthamel picked up a major decision at 184, Kopesky earned a decision at 197 and Richard Ausem closed out the match with a decision at 285.
After wrestling four matches in two days, head coach Roger Crebs elected to rest some of Lycoming’s usual starting lineup in the fifth-place match. The Warriors fell to John Carroll by a score of 25-7.
Registering wins for Lycoming were Hayre and Kopesky. Hayre earned a major decision with a 10-0 shutout against Tyler Mickley at 174 and Kopesky earned a decision over Bryan Steinmetz at 197.
#5 Wisconsin-Whitewater claimed the tournament title, defeating #8 Ithaca in the championship match. #18 The College of New Jersey placed third, defeating #16 Wilkes. Springfield defeated #27 Messiah in the seventh-place match to round out the top-eight place-winners.
The Warriors will travel to Messiah for a rematch of today’s meeting on Friday, Jan. 16. The first bout is set for 7:30 p.m.
