After finishing a noteworthy career at NCAA Division II Young Harris College, Mike Matthews is set for his first season as an assistant coach with the Lycoming College men’s lacrosse team.

Matthews spent the fall semester in 2013 as a student assistant coach with the Mountain Lions while finishing a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Psychology from Young Harris. During that time, he also served as the head coach for the East Cobb Lacrosse Club team.

Matthews has several coaching experiences with lacrosse in Georgia, working as the head coach of Rome Youth Lacrosse in 2011-12 and as an assistant with the program in 2010-11. He also has worked with both Xcelerate and Trilogy Lacrosse Camps throughout the state. In the summer of 2011, he played with the Glenelg Lacrosse Club in South Australia, where he also served as a coach for the U-13 program.

As a midfielder for the Young Harris in 2013, Matthews tied for second on the team with 30 points, posting 16 goals and 14 assists while serving as a team captain and earning team MVP honors. He transferred to Young Harris after two seasons with Division II Shorter University, where he played under current Young Harris head coach Kirk Rogers, who was an assistant with the Hawks. At Shorter, Matthews spent two seasons as a starting midfielder and team captain, posting 26 points as a junior and 28 as a sophomore for the Division II school.

A native of Roswell, Ga., he began his collegiate career at Indiana Tech, a member of the Men’s Collegiate Lacrosse Association, a collegiate club lacrosse program.
