A four-year letterwinner at St. Mary’s College of Maryland, Joe Smith spent the past two years at DeMatha Catholic High School, working as the head coach of the school’s freshman team and as a history, health and physical education teacher. He is set for his first season as a Warrior assistant coach in 2013-14.
Smith appeared in 21 games as a captain during his senior year in 2010-11, helping St. Mary’s reach the NCAA Division III Elite Eight. During his career, the guard helped the Seahawks record a 91-27 overall mark and reach the NCAA Division III Sweet 16 twice. He appeared in 63 games during his career.
Before St. Mary’s, Smith played at DeMatha Catholic under head coach Mike Jones, where he was named the team’s Unsung Hero and an honorable mention all-conference selection.
Smith also has extensive experience in basketball camps, serving as the co-director of the St. Mark the Evangelist Basketball Camp for the past seven years.
A College Park, Md., native, Smith earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from St. Mary’s in 2011. He is working toward a master’s in sports and leadership from the Northeastern University’s College of Professional Studies.
