Hoheb's walk-off, Wilber's gem lifts Lycoming to doubleheader sweep

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa.—Senior Nick Hoheb (Brick, N.J. / Brick Township) stroked a walk-off single in the seventh inning of game one, then senior Sean Perkins (Berlin, N.J. / Eastern Regional) homered and drove in five while senior starting pitcher Jake Wilber (Toms River, N.J. / Toms River South) went the distance in the nightcap as the Lycoming College baseball team swept a doubleheader from SUNY Poly, 8-7 and 15-1, on Saturday, March 7 at Brandon Park.

Lycoming (6-4) pounded out 23 runs on 26 hits in the twinbill, including ten extra-base hits off SUNY Poly (0-3) pitching. The 15 runs, six extra-base hits, and six stolen bases in the second contest were all season highs for the Warriors.

In the opener, the Wildcats scored twice in the first inning. The Warriors, though, answered back with three runs in the bottom of the inning on a two-run double from junior Eric MacCluen (Downingtown, Pa. / Bishop Shanahan) and a sacrifice fly off the bat of senior Josh Bottger (Wilkes-Barre, Pa. / Wilkes-Barre Area). Perkins added his own sac fly in the second to give the Warriors a 4-2 edge.

Bottger running down a deep drive to left with the bases loaded to end the second, keeping Lycoming in the lead. However, SUNY Poly regained a 5-4 lead with three runs in the fourth.

First-year Bryce Brungard (Lock Haven, Pa. / Central Mountain) retired all four men he faced in 1 1/3 scoreless innings. In the meantime, senior Brody Lindsey (Monrovia, Md. / DeMatha Catholic) tied the game on a fourth-inning RBI single, his third hit of the contest.

One inning later, the Warriors regained the advantage when first year Miles Pealer (Sewickly, Pa. / North Allegheny) lined his first collegiate hit, an RBI single to center, then scored later in the inning on Perkins' second sacrifice fly of the day, pushing the edge to 7-5.

In the sixth, though, the Wildcats tied the game on a two-out, two-run homer from Luke Landis. Senior reliever Joel Inman (Berlin, N.J. / Eastern Regional) (1-0) answered with a 1-2-3 seventh, throwing 2.0 innings out of the bullpen.

Bottger led off the seventh with a double into the left field corner, then went to third on a sacrifice bunt. On a 2-2 pitch, Hoheb chopped a groundball through the middle of a drawn-in infield to send the Warriors to victory.

Lindsey was 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI, Bottger was 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and runs scored, Hoheb was 2-for-3 with a run scored and the game-winning RBI, while MacCluen and Perkins each drove in two runs.

In the nightcap, senior AJ Llorente (Williamsport, Pa. / Montoursville Area) rolled an RBI single to right and scored on MacCluen's sac fly in the first inning for a 2-0 lead.

The Warriors broke the game open with a six-run second, highlighted by a two-run single from Perkins, a second RBI single from Llorente, and a pair of blistering RBI doubles from Lindsey and MacCluen to take an 8-0 advantage.

Senior Nick Reeder (Montoursville, Pa. / Montoursville Area) singled in a run in the third, then the Warriors posted another big frame, scoring five runs in the fourth. First year Jack Ryan (Parcellville, Va. / Woodgrove) drove in his first college run with a single, then Perkins launched a 393-foot blast over the center field wall for a three-run home run, his second of the year, lifting the Warriors' lead to 14-0. An RBI groundout from first year Nathaniel Wilk (Columbia, Md. / Hammond) in the fifth brought in Lycoming's final run.

Wilber allowed a single on the first pitch of the game, but retired 14 of the next 15 and didn't allow another hit until the fifth. A leadoff triple followed by a single to start the sixth plated a run for SUNY Poly, but Wilber set down the final six batters of the contest.

Wilber (2-1) spun the first complete game by a Warrior since 2024, going 7.0 innings and allowing one run on four hits, with one walk and four strikeouts in an 80-pitch performance.

He was supported by two hits, a home run, and five RBI from Perkins, two hits and two RBI apiece from MacCluen and Reeder, and two hits and a RBI each from Lindsey and Llorente. Lindsey posted five hits on the day, while Perkins drove in seven runs in the twinbill.

The Warriors are back in action tomorrow, Sunday, March 8, when Lycoming again hosts SUNY Poly in a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch from Brandon Park is scheduled for 12 p.m.
