BALTIMORE, Md. — Sophomore Laurel Fite (Sherman's Dale, Pa. / West Perry) and first-year Abie Niedermyer (Muncy, Pa. / Muncy) both scored as the Lycoming College field hockey team held off Goucher College, 2-1, on Tuesday night, Oct. 13 at Beldon Field.
Lycoming (4-8, 1-4) put forth a strong defensive effort to keep Goucher (5-8, 1-4) at bay for the Warriors' first conference win of the year.
Fite started off the scoring with just under five minutes left in the first half, scoring off a feed from junior Jordyn Keffer (East Berlin, Pa. / Bermudian Springs) in a scrum off a corner for the first goal of the night, giving the Warriors a 1-0 lead at halftime.
Lycoming doubled the lead late in the third quarter, as Niedermyer got free on a breakaway and beat the keeper for an unassisted goal to put the Warriors up by a pair. Goucher answered less than two minutes later, but the Warriors held Goucher off the board in a scoreless fourth period to finish off the win.
Fite tallied her team-high sixth goal of the year, with Niedermyer scoring for the third time and Keffer picking up her first point of the season with her assist. Junior keeper Hillary Clark (Wilmington, Del. / John Dickinson) made eight saves in the cage.
Goucher's lone goal came from Ava Barnes with a Madison Usher assist. Katie Bloom made two saves for the Gophers.
The Warriors will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 17 with a Landmark Conference matchup at Elizabethtown College. The match will begin at 1 p.m. from Wolf Field.
